500ml bottle. Gusher. Black with a foamy beige head. Flavors are roasted cereals, raisins, licorice, chocolate and dust with spicy, herbal and ashy notes. Medium body, fizzy carbonation, oily texture.

On tap at EtOH. Pours a clear cola brown with a large dense tan head. Roast on the nose, chocolate and cocoa. Medium bodied, big earthy today, huge mouth drying bitterness. Long bitter finish.

Pitch black coloured body with a ridiculously large, way too high, eleven centimetre tall (to the top of the glass and beyond) tan head - either this was old or it had too much sediment in it. Aroma of yeast (perhaps thats the answer), grain, oatmeal, lactose and a bit of cream noticeable. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong meaty flavour with some grain, beef, mushrooms, yeast and soy sauce all noticeable along with some caramel, earth, grain, oatmeal and some lighter yeast and chocolate notes. Aftertaste shows some bitterness from the roasted malt, a bit of lactose and cream and some funkier earth and metallic flavours as well. Overall, a decent stout with some good notes, but the head was way too high and the pungency a bit too strong, especially in a town with some really good full-bodied beers to beat the cold temperatures. I sampled this 50 cL ’montreal-styled’ bottle purchased from Depanneur Paul (Ave des Pins @ Saint Laurent) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada for CA$4,99 on 17-September-2016, sampled in my hotel room here in Montreal a day later on 18-September-2016.

500ml bottle from IGA. Thanks Guillaume for buying. Aroma: loads of sweet chocolate, coffee and roasted malt also some medicinal notes. App: dark brown with huge moka head, great retention and thick lacing. Taste and palate: medium body, smooth, medium carbonation, medium sweetness, light long bitter finish. Overall: quite good. Too sweet but really enjoyed it anyway.

Bouteille 500ml. Couleur noire opaque, mousse moka tenace. Arôme de malt torréfié, café, chocolat. Goût de malt torréfié, café, légère acidité. Carbonatation moyenne, corps moyen-faible.

500ml bottle poured in a snifter around 10 degrees. Pours an opaque black robe topped by a finger and a half of porous moka head. Retention is moderate and lacing is not really present eventhough the brew is warm. Of course no carbs are spotted due to the opacity of the beer, but the vivid head lets you guess they are present. The nose is subtle with burnt and nutty notes and some hops. The taste is light with the barley coming in smooth with diluted burnt toast and a certain nuttiness. The good aspect of the beer is actually the way the hops roll on the back of the palate and return to the sides of the tongue, making the finish quite enjoyable. A fair stout with a good palate but lacking robustness in the flavour profile. Cheers!
