mcberko (17339) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - SEP 9, 2015
UPDATED: SEP 10, 2015 500mL bottle, sent from yourilevesque (thanks a lot, Youri), pours a dark amber orange with a small beige head. Aroma brings out dark fruits, caramel, oak barrels and booze. Flavour is well-balanced, with toffee, dark fruits, oak barrels and alcohol in good harmony. Quite oaky and even somewhat astringent. Not super complex, but very well-integrated. Very good.

Bottle - Sweet caramel and a bit of oaky Woody notes. Cloudy copper with a decent white head. Lots of sweet caramel and bourbon notes. Sweet, little boozy but quite nice.

UPDATED: SEP 11, 2015 2015-09-09. Hazy dark amber brown body, modest beige head. 3+ Aroma is alcoholic, dry malt, notes of caramel. Flavour is dry and alcoholic, Carmel notes, light wood, warming alcohol. Lingering vanilla notes in the finish. Leaves the cheeks tingly. Medium to full bodied palate, good carbonation. 3+ It has potential, and the highlights are quite pleasant but overall it’s just a bit too boozy for me today. Bottle shared by Ferris.

UPDATED: MAR 28, 2017 My Bottom Line:
Biscuits sustain crème caramel and strawberry jam allusions while delicate orange rinds and wooden chips decorate this elegant Barrel-Aged Barley Wine.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam laces atop the clear ruby shine.
-Malts are beautifully developed in the aroma while avoiding the redundant super caramelized notes that are popular within the style.
-This is too sugary for the style. Quite an elegant rendering.
-Alcohol warmth and wooden notes slowly take control of the finish, building on the tongue with each sip.
-A 2-year-old bottle became a wonderful English-style Barley Wine with tons of beautiful caramel malt notes. A younger version though yields a lot more pineapple fruitiness, thanks to Galaxy hops.
-Carbonation is very comfortable (for the bottled version). Supple and effervescent; perfect calculation with the level of residual sugars.

Bottles and on tap at Winter Warmer Montreal.

[7623-20150909] 500mL bottle. Syrup caramel and taffy grains aroma. Clear, amber orange body with a medium-lasting creamy off-white head. Butter caramel taffy flavour has a light popcorn cream note. Medium body is pretty smooth. Boozy and interesting. (7/3/7/3/14) 3.4

pours unclear light brown burgundy with a nice light beige head showing some retention and lacing. cherries and raisins, woodsiness, caramel-plenty, some burnt notes, rum, maple, other red fruits, hint of garbage juice, booze, caramelized nuts, earthy tones. moderate sweetness. moderate carbonation, medium body - oily, bold but not harsh grassy-peppery and slightly tannic finish. very nice mouthfeel. nicely crafted barrel-aged barleywine.

(Rating #5459)

Boutip (6336) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 12, 2014
Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with good enough retention and some light lacing. Aroma of American oak is quite dominant with light vanilla notes with some grainy caramel malt notes also easily detectable. Taste is also dominated by some grainy caramel malt with some cereal notes with some huge dominant notes of American oak with loads of woody notes and some subtle vanilla notes. I usually don’t have a sweet tooth but in this particular case I would have liked residual sugars to be more apparent.

Bottle (500 ml) at home. Split 3-ways. This bottle is at least a year old. Hazy orangey copper with a large off-white head, medium retention, leaving heavy but spotty lacing. Aroma is of caramel and resin but it’s well balanced by alcohol, bourbon, vanilla and moderate fruitiness (red fruits). Taste is sweet but not cloying with caramel, alcohol, oak, bourbon, vanilla, red fruits, resin and moderate bitterness. Medium to full body. Medium carbonation, but it’s also bordeline fizzy. A bit oily mouthfeel. Resinous but also fruity finish. Medium alcohol warmth. There’s a bit of a peppery spiciness that lingers a little. A pretty flavorful sipper where the alcohol is really well integrated. Not a sweetness bomb, nor an overly bitter Barley Wine so it’s kind of easy drinking for the style. If it was not of the fizzy-ish mouthfeel, it would be among the best Barley Wine on Québec’s beer scene. Tasty.

SlovakSniper (5561) - Candiac, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 18, 2013
