3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JAN 27, 2017 Bready nose, turning to resinous as it breathes. Medium spritzy body. Pleasant bitterness with hints of barley sugar sweetness. Crisp and fizzy with a pleasant mildly bitter finish. A very drinkable refresher and a welcome counterpoint to some of those overdone IPAs I’ve been drinking lately.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750ml bottle. Spicy, zesty aroma. Big, fluffy off-white head. Nice champagne body, light and fluffy. Easy on the palate. Medium dark malts. Has some dry noble hop tone. Comes off as more of a a Saison than a Bierre de Garde. Some faint banana esters come out the more yu sip. Sublime buckwheat malt notes. Pretty good.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, best by June 2017 (i.e. bottled in June of 2015). Deep golden. Thick, persistent white foam. Mellow, but very rustic and polished aroma of lemon balm and aniseed (Strisselspalt), tangerine oil, new mown hay, dusty yeast, flowers, and hints of melanoidins (poundcake). Soft carbonation. Fluffy, understatedly complex pils malt displays a vanilla cake and new mown hay dimension beneath a honeyed baguette richness, with dusty yeast adding rusticity. Bright lemony hops mirror the malt in their delicateness, and fill out the body as they zing the tongue with considerable oiliness. Impeccable balance, throughout. Zero phenols or esters to be found, as this is incredibly focused and well-lagered. Dabs of piecrust and lemon-fused shortbread add to the adroitly extracted malt. Herbal, licorice-y bitterness is seamlessly entwined with weightless pils-derived hay dust in the very rustic but squeaky clean, yeast-kissed finish. A maltcentric, lagerlike rendition that exemplifies balance and rusticity. There’s nary a trace of esters or fermentation byproducts to speak of. Very heller bock-like in its sophisticated, long-boil maltiness which is rich in hay dust, and even suggests melanoidins at times (though, as with a number of Franconian heller bocks, this is more honeyish than sweetly sugary, and leans towards dry), with a slightly farmy edge. Very cool beer! Another brewery I hope to visit in rural France someday.
It’s worth noting that, while this is still fresh and vibrant and there’s no trace of oxidation at eight months of age, its decline has clearly begun. So, IMO, it’d be advisable to refrain from critiquing this if it’s much older than that, and wait for a fresher sample.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle purchased at K&L in redwood city. Musty, farm aroma. Faint flower field. A little wet paper. Clear sherry-orange with white head that only retains a collar. Funky musk and Brett like characteristics. Oxidized finish. Moderate high bittering for style. Has the cellar characteristics, but is really lacking maltiness.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Serving: from bottle purchased at The Beer Junction.
Aroma: light soap.
Appearance: huge, frothy, white, initial head with very good lacing and mostly lasting longevity. Cloudy, dark-yellow body.
Taste: lightly sour, soap and leather initial flavor and lightly sweet, lemony finish with short duration.
Palate: light body, watery texture and fizzy carbonation.
Overall: strange. I can’t say that I enjoyed this beer, but it was interesting.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
A very yeasty brew, the yeast in the neck looked liked brains .. Cardboard, honey, dust, yeast, and hay .. Mouth was a bit plucky .. Old school feel, a decent Biere de garde but nothing special .. . . Never underestimate the power of a good slap on the butt

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
750 ml. bottle. Best by 5/1/17. Must be pretty fresh for an import... It pours a burnt orange color with a tall white head. The aroma is subtle with some light fruity notes of apple and pear. Some toasted grains as well. The flavor is pleasant with more peppery farmhouse character, light floral and herbal hops, toasted grain and pear/apple fruit. Everything is in good balance. The mouthfeel is medium to heavy with a hint of peaches and honey sweetness. High carbonation. Really pleasant and tasty stuff.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A nice biere De garde, very earthy. Pours a cloudy yellow with a white head. Smells of peaches, lemon and earthiness. Taste is a bit tart, lots of peaches, Apple, tropical fruit and earth. Paired with raspberry blue cheese salad, the beer is smoothed out, with less tart and more earthy tones. Had in the bottle.
