The traditional bière de garde was a hearty solid beer that was fit for storing to use as compensation to farmhands instead of gold. After a long day in the Leelanau sun we would rather get paid in this beer than gold. Good Harbor Golden celebrates its magnificent appeal as a stoic, solid, quiet-type ale. Because the beer spends so long in the oak it won’t be ready for the public until sometime in May.

Bottle at Koht. Pours golden yellow colour. Moderate white head. Slight acididness, hints of apple vinegar, sourness of the apples, notes of vanilla, earthiness, notes of barnyard in the aroma. Notes of apples, slight acididness, notes of vanilla at first. Acidic, bit vinegary in the middle. Apples in the end. Earthy, citrussy notes and apples in the aftertaste. Rather dry palate, light body. Well drinkable.

UPDATED: OCT 31, 2017 Bottle, 0.375l. Aroma of wheat, funk, wine, barnyard, pepper and wood. Hazy orange golden color with thin quickly diminishing off-white head and average sparkling appearance. Taste starts sour vinous and citric, following is bready, yeasty, woody and earthy, mouthfeel is dry, while finish is mild bitter. Medium body, slick texture and average carbonation in palate. Excellent refreshment, although a bit strong...

Bottle. Light hazy golden with a small white head with ok regeneration. Sour and funky nose with white grapes, pepper, oak, lemon and mild leather. The flavour has lots of wood - like oak and twigs, lemon, light grease/fatness, lemon, leather and barnyard. Medium to full body, oily texture with mild sweetness and medium sourness with a light lactic twang. Long funky finish with sourness. Ok.

hazy yellow colour, minimal off-white head; aroma of fruitiness, barnyard, woody notes, wet wheat, some pineapple, tannines and acetone notes, taste of vinegar, barnyard, bittery tannines and some fruitiness; is it really a Bire de Garde? I've found it more like a gueuze, or a wild ale...

Bottle with PatrickFannon 5-6 years ago. Pours hazy yellow golden with a smaller sized head and average lacing. Aroma of flowers, apples, chamomile, lemon skin, pears, grapes and some toasty malts. Medium bodied with a dry close. Awesome beer.

My first review can only be for the beer that started it all for me eight years ago at Spuyten, and which I always go back to (if/when I can find it, which is extremely rare in DK). This beer is wild ale perfected, vinous, clean, with a fruity sourness. Could drink this for ages. Even after meeting Cantillon I’ve never stopped yearning for this one.
