Okay, this one isnt for everybody yet. Over the years weve been asked to brew a year-round IPA, but have balked at the idea because of the flood of American IPAs currently on the market. If we couldnt make an IPA that was different what was available, that we personally liked to drink, and one that we could put our personal signature on and be proud of, we didnt want to do it. So, last fall we brewed a single batch IPA on our new brewhouse and sent it out to 5 different markets around the country to test the response. Which turned out to be pretty positive. So, here we are in 2009, and were back playing again with a few new test batches that were sampling here in Colorado and a few select markets around the country. Whats in a name, you ask? Well, back in February of 2007, there was an article in there titled Extremely Boring. Go back and find that issue, and that specific article, and youll see why we named the beer 400 Pound Monkey. Happy sleuthing!

On tap at The Rake, London. Colour; straw yellow, off-white head. Nose; hay, floral. Taste; grassy, some citrus, faint hops. To be honest I found it boring and dull, I wish I was drinking Brewdog Hardcore IPA or Dogfish head 90minute instead.

skortila (5685) - Baarn, NETHERLANDS - AUG 13, 2010
On tap @ Beer Temple, Amsterdam. The aroma has some caramel malts, oranges, grapefruits. Slightly hazy, yellow-orange coloured beer with an off-white, lasting, medium head. The taste is slightly bitter, has caramel malty sweetness and fruitiness, more hopbitter in the end. Medium bodied. Easy drinker.

Bottle from GBBF 2010. Peppery spicy herby IPA. Gold with a slight haze, thin off white head. Some bitterness on finish. Some ok fruit in the mouth. Good bitterness on the finish. Very decent and non showy IPA.

Bottle. This has a relatively low rating but Im not sure why. Pours a glowing orange with a frothy sticky white head. Aroma isnt super fresh so its a bit biscuity, light honey, light resiny. Flavor is certainly on the dry side, light toffee and biscuit, some piney resiny hops, just a touch floral, dry and drinkable with nice character, medium bitterness. Light bodied, sizzling carbonation, nice. Would love to try this fresh. Oh yea... the 7% is nowhere to be found.

BFassburg (23) - El Paso, Texas, USA - AUG 9, 2010
Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass it formed a 1/2 inch white head with fine bubbles that dissipated quickly, leaving a thin head. Aroma has hints of ginger, herbs and citrus. Color is pale gold and it is very clear. It has a bitter dry taste with hints of ginger and citrus that overpowers the mild malt flavor, though it isnt overpoweringly bitter.

I dont get the monkey thing, was expecting some big crazy beer with the clever label, but ended up with just a pretty simple, solid beer. Everything about the beer is a light malt smell to a light bready taste to light finish, but very very drinkable for an almost 7% beer. This is one of the better Left Hand beers ive had.

tmoreau (4164) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - AUG 7, 2010
12 oz. bottle poured to a snifter at Lunar Brewing Co. in Villa Park, IL. Presented a hazed, deep orange color, with about a 1/2" of creamy, off white head foam that lasted for awhile, and then deposited some web-like lacing on the sides. The nose was a little yeasty funk, light citrus, and some mid-fruit. Less the funk, the flavor was similar notes, with a strong lasting bitterness, and dry finish.

renffisch (891) - london, Greater London, ENGLAND - AUG 7, 2010
Bootle from GBBF 2010. Hazy orange, fine carbonation. Fine thin head. Tropical dried fruit hop nose, quite delicate with hints of pineapple. Sweet flowery flavors, good balanced bitterness. Maybe not as strong and raw as usual American IPAs, but no mistaking it for a real english-style IPA. Nice though!

MoritzF (9759) - Ottobrunn, GERMANY - AUG 6, 2010
(bottle, 35.5cl) Hazy, pale golden colour with a blond and short foamy head. Citric, limey and slightly piney hoppy aroma with a light bready malty background. Bitter-sweet flavour, medium to light bodied with a moderate carbonation. Mildly bready malty base with a good dash of fruity and piney aroma hops, leading into a lasting and moderately bitter finish. Easy-going and pleasant IPA. 04.VIII.10
