COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Okay, this one isnt for everybody yet. Over the years weve been asked to brew a year-round IPA, but have balked at the idea because of the flood of American IPAs currently on the market. If we couldnt make an IPA that was different what was available, that we personally liked to drink, and one that we could put our personal signature on and be proud of, we didnt want to do it. So, last fall we brewed a single batch IPA on our new brewhouse and sent it out to 5 different markets around the country to test the response. Which turned out to be pretty positive. So, here we are in 2009, and were back playing again with a few new test batches that were sampling here in Colorado and a few select markets around the country. Whats in a name, you ask? Well, back in February of 2007, there was an article in there titled Extremely Boring. Go back and find that issue, and that specific article, and youll see why we named the beer 400 Pound Monkey. Happy sleuthing!

Among my New Years Resolutions is that I will try better to enjoy IPAs as soon I buy them and not make the excuse of "seeing how these age." So I just got this loose bottle at Binnys. Has a friendly, hoppy smell right under the cap. If Im not mistaken, both English earthy bitterness and a bit of American pine in here. Pours a puffy head over a golden, slightly amber beer, well-filtered, with a swirl of bubbles. Taste seems to have malt and hops running on separate tracks here. By now I think the Pacific hops are in the majority, focus on pine flavors, but with some extra bitterness besides. malts are quite distinct, with just a bit of light toast to them. Probably much sweeter than Im tasting here, thanks to the extra bitterness. There should probably more distinct hop character beyond the mere bitterness, but I guess thats the profile they want to achieve, so go right on ahead, guys.

Hazed golden color with a smallish, but stable off-white head. Light citrus and yeast aromas. Hints of sweet wheat and malt. Fairly dry from the start. Mild grapefruit zest hops lead the way and charge to the finish. Some spiciness, but not a clean, clear zip, but a mix of old spices. Some woody malt in the linger. I done know if this one survived the voyage. 6/10

Nice mouthfeel because bottle carbonated. Head dissolved fast. Great hop aroma. Bread like malt with caramel have the malt of and English style, then gives way to strong citrus hops. Lemon, grapefruit, a touch orange, grass, a touch pungent finish. A bit sticky but with lighter body. English style up front but finishes bitter and a touch acidic and spicy to me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Shaws, best by 4/2/16. Pours a hazy yellow with minimal head and some light lacing. Citrus aroma, lots of malt, balanced nicely with a medium hop finish. Pretty easy drinking for an IPA, more malt than hops.

Slight aroma. Clear golden color with little foam with white lacing on the glass. Good beer for trying it out. But not so exciting or flavorful to be a personal favorite. A little bittery aftertaste.

Pours a clear amber with a medium, beige head; moderate lacing. Aroma is a fruity hop, bready malt blend. Taste is moderate to high bitter with a hint of sweetness. Mouthfeel is medium with a bit of oilyness; light bitter finish. Overall, an interesting beer, worth the try but nothing too exciting.
