On tap at Hops & Pie. Clear dark chestnut with a light beige head. Smokey peppercorn bacon on the aroma--lovely, with an underlying earthy toffee-ish tone. Flavor is a big pile of fun. Gently smokey, kinda meaty, a little salty, sweet earthiness, with a light peppery smokey ending. Quite a smokey treat, without being too smokey or too roasty. UPDATED: NOV 22, 2012 On tap at Left Hand. Pours dark, opaque brown with a finger of tan head, moderate lacing. Aroma is smoky and malty, like a rauchbier. Hop and malt smells are masked. Smoky flavor up front, then hops come through. Hops have pleasant, mild citrus notes. Caramel malty tones. Smoky finish that lingers. The alcohol is well masked. Hoppiness comes through as the beer warms. Moderate carbonation and medium body. A tasty, bold, doppelbock with smoky flavors that make it reminiscent of a light rauchbier.
