A traditional London style beer, our Black Jack Porter highlights chocolate malt and Kent Goldings hops. Its slight initial sweetness quickly yields to the distinctive roastiness of the chocolate malt. The Kent Goldings hops perfectly balance the malt, making it very smooth, with a surprisingly clean finish.

bottled on 1/03/07-pours a kind of clear dark purple red with a nice two finger tan solid fluffy head, kind of a weird color for a porter. aroma is a nice solid malt with a touch of hops and a somewhat dark fruit or rasberry. has a medium body with great lacing and descdent carbonation. flavor is odd like the aroma, has malt a touch of hops and the rasberry comes in. kind of an odd and different porter, but also nice at the same time. very smooth also with a touch of dry hop aftertaste. as it warms some roasted malt flavor and aroma comes in to play.

UPDATED: JUN 25, 2007 355ml bottle (Pikkulintu, Helsinki , American Week 2007). Excessively sweet smell. Excessively sweet taste. An insult to "porter". Not like UK porter at all. However, not so bad Id refuse a free one.

Pours a deep brown with frothy tan head with poor retention and minimal lacing. The aroma is definitely sweet, with caramel, raisins and some chocolate. The flavor is roasty, malty and chocolatey sweet. The finish is a bit on the thin side when compared to other porters. Its creamy and pleasant at first, but then it fades to a watery finish that reminds me of bad coffee with hop bitterness. Overall this is a decent porter, just not as full and flavorful as many others. I think they put to much emphasis on making it balanced and making it finish clean, when they should have focused on making it fuller bodied and more complex.

Rated 1/27/06: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, dark in color with a hint of red. Absolute minimal head retention and no lacing. Aroma was not prominantly displayed but it was evident that this porter would have some sweetness to it. Very thin mouthfeel for a porter, but creamy and very smooth. The best thing going for this one is the flavor. I didnt expect much based on the aroma and appearance, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was correct to expect a sweet taste to this one, chocolate malts easily make themselves known, and are well blended with other roasted and coffee malt flavors. A slight hoppiness is present which I think really brings this porter full circle. Well made overall, although I wish it had a thicker body to it. I would surely try this one again, preferably on tap.

On draft at the Mile Square in Hoboken. Big time chocolate in this one. Tasty even on a warm day.

Unusual flavor of flouride and chickory and water. It was like they infused kent goldings hops with some watery old coffee. Not a repeat beer.

this was a very tasty porter from a brewery that has yet to disappoint. chocolate and roast are evident here, some light head to this medium dark beer.

12 oz brown bottle dated 12/06. In the glass it is very dark brown and nearly opaque. Has an off white light tannish brown head that immediately fades to ring around the inside of the glass. Pop the lid and you get a pleasant beery uncooked rising bread dough yeasty aroma, with some chocolate milk mixed in. Very nice impressionable smell turn primarily into chocolate milk once it is poured into the glass. Medium low fiss carbonation that is friendly and easy to appreciate. Chocolate smell continues with the first tastes. The chocolates fade to an interesting roastyness that is welcomed. Finish is building mild to medium roasty malt bitterness that is well controlled. Overall a good example of a decent dark beer. The finish could be a little more mannered but that thought leaves my head after a few minutes. The chocolate aromas continue strong up to the very end.

I had to hit the century mark with a special beer. I know this one doesnt get the highest rating, but it is one of the smoothest and well-balanced brews Ive encountered. In addition I love the roasted aroma accomanpied with that smooth sweet chocolate taste. Man I really like this one.
