Notes: GABF visit
I was expecting a lot out of this bottle, and ended up fairly disappointed. The dark malt is weaker than you want in a Schwarzbier, leading to a lagery fruitiness that covers up any benefits of including rye. The oily, slick texture feels great, but that doesn’t help the general blandness that plagues this beer worse than its horrible name. Received in trade from KarrHeel03, thanks for the opportunity.
Pours a dark brown color with beautiful garnet highlights and a good sized tightly bubbled tannish head that persists forever.
Smells of cherries and plums, chocolate, caramel, rye bread and a slight spiciness as well. Very little hops left, but I believe this bottle is almost 2 years old so they’ve surely faded.
Taste is a creamy chocolaty spicy fruity affair. Definitely a unique take on a black lager. Smooth with chocolate and brown sugar notes up front meld towards a fruity spicy rye character that lingers long after every sip. Super creamy mouthfeel, Medium body and carbonation level. I really enjoyed this one. I wonder how this would have been fresher, but I thoroughly enjoyed it as is.
Traded 22oz 2008 bottle. Very dark brown color with a bubbly tan head and nice lacing. Carbonation makes it look cola-esque.Big aroma of chocolate and malt plus a hint of rye. Much of the same in the flavor with chocolate and the rye pops up in the finish. Much fuller mouthfeel than expected. Something different and nice.

Deep chesnut coloured clear beer. Short lived chocolate colured head. Nice palate - silky smooth and soft leading to a crisp bite in the finish. Spicy and bitter rye with a subdued touch of very light roastiness. Lingering bitter aftertaste. A bit different this beer! Goes down easy.
Bottle shared at Maltzilla’s All American Weekend. Pours dark brown/black color with brownish head. Aromas of roasted malts, rye, chocolate. Burnt malt flavor with some spiciness from the rye. 22oz bottle. Very dark, dark brown color. Light tan head. Spicy, peppery aroma of the rye. Loads of roast. Burnt grain scent. A good bit of chocolate malts as well. Very thick body, like a heavy viscous motor oil. Nice flavor, lots of char, a bit of spice. Finishes with a nice earthy hop. Citrus with dark chocolate is a great touch of flavor to leave behind. Has aged beautifully.
