This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

Pours with a creamy off white head that fades fast. Very nice malt flavors. Smooth start to finish. A pleasant stout all in all.

This is one of the worst beers I've ever had in my entire life. One of my local favorites is "Lancaster Brewing Milk Stout" and I made an incorrect assumption that this would be similar. It misleadingly pours like a Guinness, which I also like, and at first seems to taste similar. However, very quickly the beer turns into something horrible. Even though it tries to have a smooth texture, it finishes with an overpowering bitter "medicine-like" aftertaste. It tastes nothing like the aforementioned beer from Lancaster, which I would recommend and give the highest rating to. Every additional sip was a forced struggle and after taking 30 minutes to get through half a pint, I decided that it was worth my money not to be sickened anymore by this swill.

lactose, vanilla, sweet creamy, a hint of hoppy tartness, thick creamy head. a bit low on the body despite the thick head. I'd like to like it more but--for now--it's not a Fave, just a Solid

What's not to like here?: 1) visually stunning-- especially with the Nitro pour; 2) superb rich and full nose gets you excited for the first taste; 3) creamy, mocha, amazingly smooth deliciousness, with just a touch of sweetness; 4) 6% keeps it smooth and drinkable (I've never been able to discern any alcohol in this beer)...but gives it an extra kick over other non Imperial stouts; 5) almost a session beer!; 6) The Nitro version is the American craft-brew answer to Guinness, but far surpasses the Irish legend in taste and freshness. 7) A superb drinker for this time of year.

Scent of chocolate. The taste is chocolate and a little sweetheart. Okay bitterness that fills the upper part of the mouth to a weak moment. Okay beer. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.

Dark chocolate, cacao, dark roast coffee, dark roast malts. Hazy, very dark brown, tiny, creamy, beige head. Light bitter. More bitter chocolate, dark roast malts, cacao, soft carbonation, medium bodied. Nice. Keg at GABF17, Denver.

From May 2007

This pours from 12oz bottle a very dark brown with a large billowy tannish head of foam. That soon breaks down to a few islands in the middle and it has some lacing.

The smell has some chocolate notes but it mostly smells like a lager.

The taste on first sips has some chocolate and roasted malt flavour with a bit of hop bitterness and fruitiness in the background.
Further sips in and the flavours I mentioned seem to subside and the brew becomes kind of watery though the finish is on the bitter side.

The mouthfeel is pretty thin on this one and the carbonation is low.

Bottom line: This is just an average example of the style and though I'm glad I tried it, I wouldn't bother seeking it out again.

UPDATED: DEC 5, 2017 ABV - 6.0 IBU - 25 (Lactose) .Appearance: Pitch black motor oil, lingering creamy brown head. .Aroma: Roasted malt, slight notes of chocolate, oats, and dark fruit. .Taste: Upfront roasted malt, and some sweetness, followed by a very slight bitterness. .Mouthfeel: Velvety, smooth, medium body. Very minimal carbonation. .Overall: B .Bottom Line: A beauty in the glass, but not much aroma or body to this beer. Way too light. Flavors are nice. Enjoyable.
