THE Barleywine tasting. 15.3% 2009 version. Very hazy red-brown beer, decent bubbly tan head. Light palate, a little dry. Soft and airy. Inevitably a little aniseed alcohol but not too much. Mild toffee and dried fruits. Very mild - barely there - hops. Semi dry finish. Overall pretty light for it’s abv, just a mild warmth.
Bottle. Murky chestnut color, small off white head that disappears quickly leaving no lacing. Aroma of caramel. Taste has alcohol up front, lots of summer fruit, sweet like sangria. Good body. Interesting. Leighton (21239) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - DEC 30, 2012
Bottle Vintage 2009 at The Barley Wine Tasting, London - many thanks to Kenny. Pours orange-ruby, lightly hazy, with a fine, off-white cream head. Lots of caramel on the nose, some wet pine. Big sweet flavor with tons of toasty sugar, berries, gingerbread, orange, alcohol, light spicy pine. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warm ginish with lots of caramel, moderate spices, subtle piney bitterness, toasted sugars. Drinks very well for the ABV and has an interesting spice aspect. Good one. UPDATED: SEP 4, 2012 2009 bottle, thanks to Ken at THE Barley Wine Tasting, August 2012. It pours medium brown, with reddish hues and a thin off-white head. The nose is hoppier than anticipated, pine, varnish, light caramel, toffee apple, brown sugar and orange cream. The taste is varnish, wood polish, raisin, toffee, creaminess, wood, apple, syrupy-sweet tinned fruit and a pretty serious alcohol burn, with some bitterness in the finish. Full body, fine carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. Not too shabby. Drake (13737) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 29, 2010
12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market, Charlottesville, VA. Pours a hazy dark reddish amber color with a thin tan head. Decent head retention around the edges but it eventually fades to nothing and leaves little lacing. Very fruity aroma with notes of berries, plums, green apple and pear, as well as some toffee, sugar notes and a bit of booze. The taste is big, huge malty notes, brown sugar, toffee, pear, apple, berries and some booze. Some faint chocolate sneaks in there eventually. Full bodied. Pretty hot beer and one that could probably benefit from some aging.

on tap CAH-light tan head and murky amber. Aroma is fruit-raisin/apple, sweet medium malt. Taste follows with an alcohol warming and some abrasiveness/bite. KimJohansen (10492) - Frederiksberg C, DENMARK - DEC 13, 2009
hazy orange with a medium off white head. Sweet aroma with overripe fruits, caramel and malty notes. Flavour was sweet with caramel, hops, toasted malt and overripe fruits. Finished sweet with warming alcohol. Ibrew2or3 (8614) - Tempe, Arizona, USA - JUL 3, 2011
Bottle courtesy of ksurkin pours deep clear gold with off white head. The aroma is pears, apples, wheated malts and some boozy heat at the end of the draw. The taste has a mead like sensation along with sweet malts, apples, pears, floral hops and booze. Pretty interesting barleywine for sure. laiti (8468) - Tampere, FINLAND - SEP 25, 2011

Draught @ Bakushu Club Popeye, Tokyo as ”Barley Wine of the Legend”. 14,5% version, 2011?. rated on 05.09.2011
Mahogany colour, no head. Aroma has sweet caramel, some oaky notes. Actually rather close to Utopias but less alcohol and more sweetness. Flavour has also some alcohol. It is rather woody with oak and some vanilla‐like cognac notes. Acrid finish, rather weird stuff but still good in some way.
Bottle @ THE Barley Wine Tasting. Massive thanks to Ken for bringing this behemoth to our battle of the barley wines. The pour’s deep reddish brown with a small white head. The nose is suprisingly floral, hoppy. Some warm wood, boozy barrel. The taste is sweet bearclaw donut. Runny sweet toffee malt flavors, some cocoa and cherry. Chocolate. Boozy lightly dry woody finish. Fulll body, big beer. To be honest, I’m quite impressed by how this beer carries the ABV. It’s not overbearing. A fine sipper.
