Impressive at 15.3. Certainly a beer that would do better with some bottle refinement. On tap this beer is abrasive. Not overly sweet or bitter, it’s incredibly well-balanced for such power. Legend should experiment more. TheEpeeist (3709) - Media, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 11, 2010
22 oz bottle, 2009. Cloudy brown with lacy froth; clearing to garnet. Nose is caramel, grass and wood with hints of orange peel and cherry. Medium body with a crisp but mellow buzz. Taste is caramel and bitter citrus. Simple and smooth with great depth of flavor. Ibrew2or3 (8814) - Tempe, Arizona, USA - JUL 3, 2011
Bottle courtesy of ksurkin pours deep clear gold with off white head. The aroma is pears, apples, wheated malts and some boozy heat at the end of the draw. The taste has a mead like sensation along with sweet malts, apples, pears, floral hops and booze. Pretty interesting barleywine for sure. jackl (8423) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - SEP 12, 2012
Bottle @ THE Barley Wine Tasting. Massive thanks to Ken for bringing this behemoth to our battle of the barley wines. The pour’s deep reddish brown with a small white head. The nose is suprisingly floral, hoppy. Some warm wood, boozy barrel. The taste is sweet bearclaw donut. Runny sweet toffee malt flavors, some cocoa and cherry. Chocolate. Boozy lightly dry woody finish. Fulll body, big beer. To be honest, I’m quite impressed by how this beer carries the ABV. It’s not overbearing. A fine sipper. From the bottled poured a cloudy brown brew with a thin beige head. Malty sweet aroma. Full bodied, very sweet, and a pleasant hoppy finish.

22oz bottle, 2009 edition, from total wine in norfolk. pours a syrupy, reddish copper with a thin, whispy white head leaving a ring of lace. aroma is very nice and very sweet with notes of toffee malts, red berries, honey, vanilla icing, boozy cognac, and hints of candied pineapple. flavor is surprisingly nice and not nearly as sweet as the aroma with notes of orange citrus, apple cider, and sweet toffee with hints of earthy hops, cherry brandy, and a sweet, malty finish. palate is full bodied and very sticky with some hot booze but not 15.3% hot. overall, a solid bold, fruity barley wine from the legend guys. obguthr (6666) - Staunton, Virginia, USA - DEC 25, 2009
Bottle-2009. Yeasty raisin and orange aroma. Hazy ochre, thin yellow head. Full body. Deliciously fruity flavor of grapefruit, cherries, and brown sugar with a bready base. Tastefully bitter orange peel finish. It’s a bit like liquid fruitcake and a nice choice for Christmas. Alcohol evident but tolerable and tastes nowhere near the 15.3% on the label .
Re-rate: This is a dangerous drink. It didn’t seem to have as much alcohol as advertised, but I felt it an hour later, and it had me walking sideways. Inbibe carefully. zizzybalubba (1886) - Raleigh, North Carolina, USA - JAN 22, 2010
22 oz. bottle from Total Wine in Norfolk (2009 bottle at 15.3%). Brownish orange pour with a thin off-white head. Aroma of tangerines, caramel, sweet malt, vanilla, and bourbon. The flavor is big and alcoholic; whiskey comes to mind first with this one. Some citrus and vanilla in the flavor as well. Noticeable alcohol warming. Not my favorite barleywine but certainly a strong effort from Legend. Drake (14078) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 29, 2010
12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market, Charlottesville, VA. Pours a hazy dark reddish amber color with a thin tan head. Decent head retention around the edges but it eventually fades to nothing and leaves little lacing. Very fruity aroma with notes of berries, plums, green apple and pear, as well as some toffee, sugar notes and a bit of booze. The taste is big, huge malty notes, brown sugar, toffee, pear, apple, berries and some booze. Some faint chocolate sneaks in there eventually. Full bodied. Pretty hot beer and one that could probably benefit from some aging. jcwattsrugger (12524) - Florida and, New Jersey, USA - DEC 1, 2010
on tap CAH-light tan head and murky amber. Aroma is fruit-raisin/apple, sweet medium malt. Taste follows with an alcohol warming and some abrasiveness/bite.
