12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market, Charlottesville, VA. Pours a hazy dark reddish amber color with a thin tan head. Decent head retention around the edges but it eventually fades to nothing and leaves little lacing. Very fruity aroma with notes of berries, plums, green apple and pear, as well as some toffee, sugar notes and a bit of booze. The taste is big, huge malty notes, brown sugar, toffee, pear, apple, berries and some booze. Some faint chocolate sneaks in there eventually. Full bodied. Pretty hot beer and one that could probably benefit from some aging. Emeister84 (2505) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - JAN 2, 2013
Aromas of raspberries, cherries, blackberries, black cherries, and cola, with a subtle nuance of vanilla. Appearance is almost black, with purplish tint, and off-white/light tan head foam. Taste is quite sweet and fruity, with flavors similar to Australian Shiraz, with slight notes of nuts and toffee, and a booze-driven spiciness. A plump, lively carbonated beer, fruity and boozy with very slight hop prevalence, and an off-dry, fruity, lingering finish. Attests very well (as I can only imagine) to the old English standard that beers can be crafted, absolutely, in order to sit side-by-side with complex European wines. UPDATED: SEP 4, 2012 2009 bottle, thanks to Ken at THE Barley Wine Tasting, August 2012. It pours medium brown, with reddish hues and a thin off-white head. The nose is hoppier than anticipated, pine, varnish, light caramel, toffee apple, brown sugar and orange cream. The taste is varnish, wood polish, raisin, toffee, creaminess, wood, apple, syrupy-sweet tinned fruit and a pretty serious alcohol burn, with some bitterness in the finish. Full body, fine carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. Not too shabby.

Pours deep mahogany brown with medium tan head. Smell is sugar crystals, toffee, dark fruits, booze. Taste is not as nice as the smell. Boozy sugary toffee, sugar plums, more booze. Big slow sipper with lots of depth. Nice dead of winter barley wine. KimJohansen (10509) - Frederiksberg C, DENMARK - DEC 13, 2009

Pours a rich amber with a light tan head and little lacing down the glass. The nose is dominated by sweet caramel malts. Taste is dollops of toffee, a touch of hot alcohol, some caramelised oranges in there as well. Generally very pleasant, though the hangover after polishing off a growler of this stuff was a bitch.
