On tap at Legend on 03/16/2011. Dark black body with a medium creamy light brown head. Sweet smoke, chocolate, and roast aroma. Nice smoke, dry roast, chocolate and faint fruit flavor. Medium full body moderate carbonation. Scubatrip (610) - Annandale, Virginia, USA - FEB 21, 2012
On tap at the brewpub in Richmond, pours black with a decent tan foamy head. Smells mostly like chocolate syrup with a few notes of campfire. Taste is similar. Kinda thin but not quite watery. Chocolate syrup, hickory campfire smoke, a little of yesterday’s charcoal. Balanced, good, but not my favorite.

The smell is overpowered by the smokey aroma. Under that and hiding is the chocolate. It’s noticeable but barely. Would of loved to have seen just a tad bit more chocolate here. The taste is pretty much just the same. Roastiness up front, smokiness follows, and then the small amount of lingering chocolate. I would of loved a little bit more of a smooth and rich mouthfeel, instead it’s a bit gritty. Drake (13739) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 6, 2011
Bomber from Wine and Beer Westpark, Richmond, VA, opened 3/24/11. Pours a pitch black color with a medium creamy brown head. Good head retention and lacing. The aroma is quite smoky, with bacon featuring prominently. This overwhelms the aroma pretty much but there are some faint roasted and nutty notes in there. The taste is bitter roasted malts, smoked ham, considerable smoke, some hops in the finish. Medium-full bodied. They certainly didn’t pull their punches here. Thankfully I’m well beyond the days when I couldn’t stand a smoked beer. Certainly I’d like some more balance in this one, but its a good beer. jcwattsrugger (12420) - Florida and, New Jersey, USA - JUL 27, 2011
22oz bottle-pours a foamy light brown head and black color. Aroma is ashy-dark malt, smoke/peat. Taste is ashy/smoke/peat-dark malt, some earthy hops.

They weren’t kidding when they said smoked- but I liked it! Did I imagine bacon? Bacon & maple? Anyway- it’s pitch black too. Has a little sour and some dry on the end. Finish hangs on a little. Is both light and tingly and warm and enveloping. jtclockwork (16600) - , New Jersey, USA - JUL 21, 2011
Bottle shared by Jcwattsrugger. Pours black. Tan head. Nose and taste of fire pit ash, peat, smoked oats and chocolate. Short almost nonexistent finish. Thin body. Taste falls a bit short of the nose. GandGKevin (934) - Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA - MAY 28, 2011
22oz bottle. Pours black with a large tan head. Aromas of mostly campfire and a underlying dark chocolate. Flavors of chocolate covered bacon. Medium bodied. Finishes with heavy smoke flavors. Overall the smoke is too heavy, overwhelms the senses and hides the stout. GODiSSOUTHERN (390) - Virginia, USA - MAY 14, 2011
Pours dark brown with a 1/4 inch head which disappeared relatively fast. Interesting aroma of chocolate and hickory smoke. Same flavors up front. On the downside, the mouthfeel is very thin and finishes weak. chibuck (3513) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 22, 2011
Thanks to godissouthern for this extra... a light black body with a light tan head, rises a quick finger but gone right away... really enjoyable nose, a smoked nose that’s almost as good as German, nice smoke with a hint of charred ash though... the taste is good but the mouth feel kills this, its watery and overcarbonated, not a winning combination, smoke and a little chocolate... if they fixed the mouth feel I’d have this again
