COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big Eddy Baltic Porter is a blanket of malt flavor. Notes of toffee, cocoa, caramel, toasted bread and sherry fruit flavors are interwoven to produce a symphony of splendor. Our Baltic Porter is an homage to the brewers of the Baltics and a tribute to our own historic brewing waters, the Big Eddy Spring.

Bottle from Woodmans in the Falls. Pours reddish brown with a bit of a off-tan head. No real lacing, although when worked hard, there is some. Aroma has licorice, molasses and faint chocolate. A sweeter aroma than that would seem. Taste is of milk chocolate, licorice, some caramel malt and some presence of raisins. Finishes moderately quickly; sweet and slightly sour. Not a ton going on here. More that they could not decide what they wanted to do. Drinkable, and not bad, but just not really good either.

Roast, coffee, fruit. A bit on the sweet side, but decent. Very dark brown. Medium-full bodied and a touch oily. Decent, but Im not all that impressed.

12oz. bottle, 2012 vintage. Some berry jam and dried fruit in the aroma, along with notes of darkly toasted, lightly sweet malts, toffee and some faintly earthy, winey touches in the background. Dark mahogany in color, nearly black, with a very slight, light tan ring head. Flavor profile is gently sweet, fruity and lightly tart, some cherry, prune and faint cocoa, and finishing with a toffeeish, toasty malt presence and faint alcohol. Very low in effervescence on the palate, mildly warming, tannic and coating, and with a full body. Interesting take on the style for sure.

Toffee, chocolate, and fruit. Leinenkugels, after nearly 150 years, is finally starting to get creative with their brews. Its good, but the fruity aftertaste is slightly unappealing.

Bottle at a BOSS meeting thanks to Goetz! Pours brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is toffee and malt. Flavor follows and is much more toffee and caramel than roast. Really nice beer. Not quite a Baltic Porter, but really nice nonetheless.

Mahogony colored pour small tan head w/ very little lacing. Aroma is a bit metalic some black malt and a lot of lactose like sugar. Almost over carbonated palate after that its pretty thin. Flavor is very light touches of iron and black malt and not much else. Very disappointing.

December 26, 2012 - bottle from Coffee Grounds. Dark brown pour with nice amount of head. Caramel, roasted malt, toffee and dark fruit in the aroma. Taste seemed to be mostly the caramel and dark fruit with a mild alcohol and nutty finish.

12 0z. bottle. Pours dark brown black with a tight thin creamy looking khaki head that settles to a wispy film and collar. Aroma has some dark pitted fruit and wet cork scents with some fig, raisin and mocha. Taste is more raisin licorice and figs with a strong bitterness and faint bakers chocolate and a little yuk. Palate is medium sticky and meh.

Transfer from BA review on 5-24-13- Poured from bottle into a snifter Appearance The beer pours a deep-deep chestnut color bordering on black. Upon pouring there is a thin tan colored foam sitting atop the brew which fades rather rapidly to leave almost no lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell The aroma is a nice mix of a dark roasted malt aroma and some rather strong boozy aromas of port. Along with these smells are aromas of chocolate, caramel, as well as some dark fruits bringing sweeter notes to the nose and combining with the others to give a nice warming aroma to the brew. Taste The taste starts out with some roasted malt flavors as well as quite a bit of a sweeter dark fruit flavor of cherry and raisin. As the flavors advance more sweetness of some plum as well as a red wine like boozy grape flavor come to the tongue. A bit of a cocoa flavor comes more toward the end of the taste, along with an increase in the alcohol flavors due to an oncoming port taste entering the taste. In the end, the combination of sweeter dark fruits and boozy flavors leaves a rather port wine mixed with roasted malt flavor to be left to linger on the tongue; warming the mouth nicely. Mouthfeel The body of the brew a bit light for Baltic category brew. The carbonation level, on the other hand, is slightly above average. For the style, the opposite characteristics; a lower carbonation and thicker creaminess, may have better suited the style giving all the boozy fruit flavors a chance to soak into the tongue. Overall Not a bad Baltic overall. There are lots of port and dark fruit flavors swirling within this one, creating a rather fruity and sweet brew.
