The Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout was brewed at Leinenkugels tiny 10th street brewery in Milwaukee. This brew boasts a selection of 11 malts and grains balanced by three different and distinct hops. Dark and complex, with chocolate tones and notes of dark fruits, it is daring yet delicious. Travels well. Ages well.

   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 4/5   OVERALL 16/20
Morey (46) - Erie, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 25, 2012
UPDATED: MAR 31, 2012 12oz bottle. Looks like there might have been some sort of date or code at one point, but its too smudged for me to make out. The label around the neck of the bottle has 2011 on it.

Pours pitch black in color with a light brown colored head that stood about a finger tall. Even after holding my glass up to the light, Im not able to see through this one. Moderate amount of head retention and lacing.

Smells of dark fruits, coffee grounds, and molasses. Not much in the way of chocolate like you get with other RIS. Theres a charred aroma in there as well.

Taste: Theres a good amount of roasted malt flavor and burnt sugar up front. The sweetness builds and intensifies as the liquid sweeps across your palate. Thankfully, theres a touch of bitterness towards the middle that kind of balances things out. Im also getting some coffee towards the back end.

Medium-full body with low to moderate carbonation. It has an almost silky mouthfeel.

A nice Imperial Stout overall. A bit of a surprise from a brewery that makes a lot of girl-friendly summer beers.

Moreys Bottom Line: While this certainly isnt the best RIS that Ive had, it pretty darn tasty. Id buy this for the right price. Good stuff.

Rich inky black pour with a Lacey, sticky tan head. Rich sweet dark chocolaty nose with a gentle bit of oak and char and brown sugar. Rich deep dark malty flavor with brown sugary and dark chocolate flavors, full, slightly boozy and tastes almost like it was Barrel Aged. Rich and amazing.

Bottle; pours black with a thin ring of mocha colored foam; roasted malt aroma with dark fruits, chocolate, and licorice; taste has some roasty bitterness, chocolate, dark fruits, and a hint of coffee; finish is roasty and bitter; unexpectedly good for a Leinenkugel beer

I was actually not going to rate this, but its too good not to. Huge pour, huge head, viscous, impressive. Smoke nose, dirty choco malt flavor, alcohol hidden but potent. Everything youd want from an RIS is right here. Malt, sweet, burnt, bigly, sticky, sweet, burnt, all of it. ~~~~~~~~ No idea how this ended up in my fridge but Im happy it did.

zubblwump (77) - Michigan, USA - MAY 25, 2016
UPDATED: MAY 26, 2016 2015 bottle. Smells really, really good right off the bat...mostly chocolate and coffee. Pours thin, but a nice dark, near black with a dark frothy head. Sweet up front with pleasant bitter undertones. Gets better as it warms. This is a well put together, classic Russian imperial stout. I like it a lot.

Bottle from The Beer Junction, Seattle; vintage 2015
Black color, thin brown head. The aroma has a lot of leather and liquorice, hint of apples, mushroom. Lean but bold body; moderate sweetness, with intense molasses and chocolate flavor, salty, and finally roasted malts.
Delicious.

Good, enjoyable RIS. Nothing too unique or standout, but a traditional RIS executed very well. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very pleasantly surprised. Id generally consigned Leinenkugels to the large brewer trash bin but this rather small batch Imperial impressed me with its complex flavors and nice aroma. Just a wee bit too thin but an impressive effort from a larger brewer. Only trouble is finding it as it came and went in my area fairly quickly.
