Pours dark, nearly opaque, chestnut brown. Brief light tan head. Faint aroma of dried fruits. Flavor starts dry rye, morphs quickly to a sweeter, fruitier place, with a deep, rich fruitcake background, dried plums. It’s more deep and rich than sweet. It develops over time. Intriguing. UPDATED: JUL 13, 2014 12oz. bottle, 2013 vintage. Aroma of sweet, caramel malt, some spicy rye and dried fruit here as well as notes of cherry, faint madeira and vanilla. Mostly clear dark rusty brown in color with a very fine, slight head. Flavor profile is richly sweet and sugary with suggestions of brown sugar, dates, faint berry and jam, and finishing with a touch of alcoholic warmth. Relatively low in effervescence with a full, slightly syrupy feel and plenty of body, as anticipated. Earlier bottles had a tad more hop bitterness which I think has aged out to an extent, and I did prefer it fresher, for the record (this has been factored into the rating accordingly). Draft. Poured a dark brown color with a moderate frothy tan head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate complex roasted sweet malt aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture and flat carbonation. Medium dark sweet flavor with a medium sweet and small alcohol finish of moderate duration. This is a soft beer for style. b3shine (9259) - Indiana, USA - JUN 16, 2014
Draft to taster. Looks decent; softly carbonated though. A transparent caramel with razor-thin off-white lacing. Smells malty with notes of toffee and caramel. Tastes like it smells with a bit of dark fruit and spice with an average medium-bodied mouthfeel. Not bad, but maltier and more syrupy than I’d prefer. Taster on tap at Ei8ht Ball. Mostly clear dark red color. Thin ring of off-white head. Dark fruity malts in the nose. Some spicy rye grains. Moderate sweet taste. Light bit of sweet warmth. Big body, slick finish. Lighter carbonation. OK, but it doesn’t do much for me. Just kind of sweet, very slick. Hides the alcohol well-enough.

Draft sample at Ei8ht Ball. Pours a mostly clear reddish brown amber with a small off white head. Notes of toasted, caramel, and surprisingly big rye malts (late, especially), dark fruits (dates, figs, raisins), brown sugar, cookie, and a little chocolate. Medium-bodied, with a dry, toasty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. I should clarify that the amount of rye was only surprising not because I’m an idiot and couldn’t read the name, but because they didn’t hold it back at all; it’s very pronounced in the finish and gives it a dry, moderately spicy aftertaste. Interesting beer. jtw (1170) - farmington, Michigan, USA - MAY 10, 2014
2013 bottle, rich malty and spicy aroma straight from the bottle. Leathery notes of barleywine with a heavy sticky weight. A touch of alcohol heat, and a rich finish. Not a bad effort, the Big Eddy series seems pretty solid. wlajwl (7209) - Quad Cities, Iowa, USA - APR 19, 2014
Aroma is rye, caramel malts and a hint of bubblegum/astringency. The flavor is caramel malts, an undercurrent of the rye, mild fruit and a mix of warming alcohol and tartness in the finish. Decent barley wine. chucklemation (1796) - Royal Oak, Michigan, USA - APR 3, 2014
Pours a copper color with a white head. Has a nice aroma of dark fruits. Flavor is honey sweet dark fruit, along with a touch of spices. After taste leaves a little to be desired. Has a medium body mouthfeel, much less thick than most barley wines. Still, this is an enjoyable ale, and I’m glad I picked it up. kidmartinek (5007) - austin, Texas, USA - MAR 27, 2014
Pours rich but clear amber and maintains a nice head. Aroma of bitter hops and leather. Tastes like a bitter, malty medicinal leather with all of those flavors coming through a medium body.
