Draft @ Oliver Twist, 30/3-14.
Cloudy yellow with a short white head. Hoppy and citric aroma with some wheat and brett. Taste is citric, dry and bitter with straw and a spicy and slight acidic bretty character. Medium bodied, slight spritzy carbonation, dry. Pretty tasty but also a bit forgettable. Saison? IPA? Hops? Brett? Ah, just throw it in there.

Collab of Magic Rock with Lervig, a ’farmhouse IPA’ so something in between a ’wild beer’ and an IPA, bottle of about four months old. Off-white, coarse, rather loose head, quickly reduced to a thin rim of irregular bubbles and eventually to virtually nothing, on a misty pale orange blonde beer with vague olive greenish tinge near the top and quite large bubbles rising up, initially quite fiercely so but quickly calming down - it seems the carbon dioxide is not all too well bound here. Aroma of old moldy oranges, sweet ripe cantaloupe, goat cheese, fermenting apples, old dried ginger, sweaty leather, pear peel, damp straw, mango juice, some of the wryness of grape seeds, olive oil, unripe peaches, dusty haystack, pond water, moist jute bags, gooseberries, white pepper - in all, indeed an attractive mixture of New World, even slightly dank hoppiness and ’wild’ Bretty effects developing already. Fruity, estery onset, medium sparkling with a minerally side note, lots of crisp peach and red apple freshness, barely sweet though, with a soft and non-acidic, typically Brett-induced baseline sourishness reminiscent of gooseberries and raw rhubarb; supple, light mouthfeel. Dryish grainy and lightly bready malt backbone in the middle phase, carbonation stille tingling a bit on the sides of the tongue with a light fizziness to it but subtly so and in ’small’ bubbles, crisp but outspokenly fruity apple peel and sour berry impressions and growing towards a dry, somewhat wry, nicely bittering finish, where the hops establish a long, resinous, deeply bittering effect way down to the throat as well as some uplifting citrusy aromas retronasally, mixing with an equally proportioned Brett effect, dry and hayish, with some old cloth- and old wrinkled fruit peel notes; more breadiness in the end too as the sediment goes in. A deep, earthy, dried wormwood-like bitterness lingers after swallowing, with still those crisp, mildly tart fruity side notes. Too bad for the lack of head, quickly fizzing away like the ’head’ on a cola, but other than that a very enjoyable, ’rural’ feeling beer delivering exactly what it promises: a compromise between crisp, dry ’Bretted’ saison on the one hand and a a juicy, firmly bittering, citrusy IPA on the other hand. This combination works fine for me and suits a warm spring day like this perfectly - but it is a trusty combination in the end, of course, thinking of the legendary Orval trappist, which - though altogether very different from this one - also links robust hopping and dry-hopping (originally taken from English ale traditions) with a ’wild’ Brettanomyces refermentation, at least in its heydays. In that respect, this modern craft beer concept of Anglo-Saxon ’farmhouse IPA’ is far less ’exotic’ to a Belgian-raised palate like mine. In all, a very juicy, appetizing, interesting beer, which will doubtlessly differ considerably from age to age - with some cellaring, this will probably evolve parallel to indeed Orval, as the hop aromas fade and the Brett continues to eat sugars unpalatable to cultured yeast, releasing its own array of ’animalistic’ or barnyard-like, but also much more fruity-estery aromas.
