June 13, 2014 - at Station HOST - on draught. Hazy brick red with a lasting beige head. Great black IPA - strong, deep roast, solid herbal bitterness; solid body, astringent, average carbonation and a fairly long green bitter finish. For once I dug one of these!

Draught @ the brewpub (12 o’clock). Pours hazy very dark brown with small tan head. Clear aroma of malt and yeast, with notes of hops and touches of vanilla. Sweetish flavour of caramel malt and fruit, with bitter notes of hops and alcohol and estery touches. Bitter and boozy aftertaste. Nice but rather potent - is this necessary?

[5880-20131004] Tap. Smoked plastic and roasted dust aroma. Black body with a quick foamy off-white head. Lightly roasted grains flavour. Full body. Good. (8/3/7/4/15) 3.7

Overheard: "I didn’t have any male strippers at my bachelor party... Now I feel I missed out."

On tap at Saint-Bock. Pours black with low beige head. Good lacing. Aroma is of sugar, malt, dark fruits. Taste is of sugar, malt, dark fruits, alcohol, coffee, chocolate, some bitterness. Palate: Full bodied. Soft carbonation. Overall: Lots of alcohol. Hot. Nice one. The IPA aspect did not strike me at all. More Imperial Stoutish.

(Rating #5836)

Tennesee Tropical was a monster barrel-aged Black IPA clocking in at a mammoth 11% which pour pitch black with a filmy beige head. The aroma was boozy, oaky rich dark malts with plums giving it a bit of a fruitcake vibe. Th mouthfeel was nicely smooth and lush. The taste was boozy dark malts, while it was quite hoppy the malts were clearly at the forefront and the stars of the show. My overall impression was of dark maple & bitter fruits.

[Draught at Station Ho.st, Montreal] Pours black with an average size semi-lasting frothy off-white head and lots of lacing on the glass. Aroma is roasty and hoppy first and foremost followed by coffee and chocolate. In the flavour the hops hit you first followed by roasted malt, coffee, dark fruit and chocolate. Some alcohol there but not too bad. Medium bodied. Pretty good stuff.

On tap at hopfenstark in montreal. Jet black pour, big mocha head. I thought they had poured me the wrong beer. Aroma of pine resins, and lots of roasted malts with some charred coffee and soy. Creamy mouth feel, and soft carb. The finish is quite bitter with alot of char and roasty malts, with more pine resins. Double ipa?! This is american hoppy imperial stout if you ask me.

At the brewpub, deep black color, with a thick fluffy tan head, with a mild mint bitter dark chocolate, with a boozy whisky barrel liquorish nose, with some floral leafy, citrus, grassy, minty hoppy, roasted, black, chocolate malt accents, and a faint vanilla, coconut, black coffee, earthy tobacco leaf note in the aroma follows through on a full-bodied palate with a warmth yeasty, burnt dark dried fruit, dark bitter chocolate, whisky woody barrel, licorice, faint flowery tropical fruit, leafy, citrus hoppy character, with some mint chocolate, black coffee, mild roasted grind coffee bean, chocolate, roasted, black, toasted malt, faint grated coconut flavours, leading towards a warming, yeasty, dark bitter chocolate, coffeeish, licorice, minty, whiskiysh liquor finish.
