Voilá! A beer from chilly Quebec inspired by the "rauchbier" you find in Bamberg, Germany — a dark beer made partly from smoked malt, aged slowly at low temperatures, and put in the bottle unfiltered, with a fine yeast sediment. All for one!

From bottle. This poured dark with very little head. A slight aroma of the smokiness but not as much as I’d expected. Taste hits with molasses and burnt chocolate then a subtle smokiness at the end

750mL c&c split at Churchkey with the gang: TURDFERGUSON, biggirlpanties, Travlr. A deep cola red pour looks blacker in the glass topped by a healthy, tan head. Decent retention and lace. Nose is sea salt, iodine, seaweed/nori, big umami savoriness like Vegemite/Marmite but not a lot of smoked character. As it decants, you gain fresh lemon and honeydew melon in the nose. Not what I was expecting. Taste is dark cherry cola, not too much smoke...perhaps salted meat and Vegemite. Mild lactic tartness in the finish. Not sure what happened here. It’s not bad...but it’s not a smoked beer.

Bottle shared with TURDFERGUSON and GT2. Clear maroon color, large brown head. Aroma of seawater, dark cocoa, cigars. Taste has dark fruits, subtle coffee, and a subdued smolder of smoke. Decent.

Bottle at Churchkey. Nose of saltwater, light smoke, coffee, cocoa. Papery, oxidation, saltwater, roast, smoke. Not a big fan.

pushkinwow (2910) - Ottawa, CANADA - SEP 29, 2011
750ml bottle. Murky brown with tan head, smoke, syrup, malt, some molasses, metallic, bit of caramel. High carbonation, metal again, mildly sweet, some vegetable, bit of smoke throughout but light finish. Tried to let it breath but the metal just wouldn’t disappear...

750mL corked bottle poured almost black with a light beige head and good lacing. Aromas of roasted malts with some chocolate and smoke. Taste is malty sweet with some mild smokiness and some bitterness in the finish. Very palateable beer with a fine balance and not overdone with the smoke. Nice carbonation. Robust body.

C&C 750 mL bottle from State Line Liquors shared at the 14th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering, 3/19/11. Pours a slightly hazy dark reddish color with a medium sized tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of smoke, caramel, faint fruits, roasted malts. The taste is smoke, roasted malts, nutty notes, a faint sweetness in the finish. Medium bodied.

My first rauchbier! Poured a dark, deep brown with a beautiful, light brown head. The aroma was much less mild than expected. Primarily it packed a bold malty punch, with dark wild berries being the most prominent. The flavor was where the smoke spoke out the loudest. A lovely strong smokey flavor dominated a long finish. I guess the palate was supposed to be light given its lower ABV. I was hoping for a little more smoke all around.

trapped (3672) - New York, TURKEY - JUL 11, 2011
Bottle at barVolo, Toronto, on 8 July 2011. Dark brown color, tan-amber big spongy head, caramel-coca aroma with a whiff of berries, very little smoky flavor, more like a stout than Marzen! Mild carbonation and abrupt finish.
