Bottle: Poured a deep brown color ale with a quite large off-white foamy head with OK retention and light lacing. Aroma of caramelized sugar with fruity ester and oak presence is somewhat unique and enticing. Taste is a great mix of caramelized sugar notes with some fruity ester, light funky notes with some residual sugar notes and string oak presence. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol notes. Lacking some balance overall but interesting though say the least.

Bottle at 2016 Big Deck Tasting. Dark copper with a light beige head. Very minerally with some sulphur and pistachios, wet wood, vinous, brett, earthy, bittersweet with moderate carbonation and body, unbalanced but interesting.

UPDATED: OCT 18, 2016 Pours a dark reddish brown with a medium beige-ish head that leaves nice lacing. Nose is of burnt sugar, alcohol (a little raw), wood and something that could be called red wine. Taste is of pretty intense wood and almost wood grain alcohol with more red white, caramel and toffee. I wouldn’t call it too sweet, almost perfect for such a sipper actually. The overall experience is a bit rought and unrefined, though, with just too much wood. Body is medium-full, carbonation very low and mouthfeel assuredly vinous. Way more palatable than their Cab barrel-aged Saison Multigrain but certainly not a homerun. A small glass would have been plenty, not sure what I’m going to do with the rest of this bottle...

On tap at the brewpub. Hazy deep amber-brown with a small beige head, good retention, leaving little lacing. Aroma is of molasses, lots of wood tannins, liquorous and boozy notes, dusty basement, dark fruits and red fruits. Taste is of molasses but the sweetness is kind of cut by the strong woodiness and the tannins, there’s also alcohol, moderate oak spiciness, mushrooms and dust. Medium to full body. Moderate carbonation. Winey and liquorous mouthfeel with lots of wood tannins. Oaky finish. Not bad, but the barrel-aged is too intense (more in terms of wood presence than wine though) and overdone so balance is lacking a bit. It’s quite tasty, but it would probably be much better blended blended with some unbarreled young version of this beer.
