Infinitely complex in aroma and flavor with notes of maltiness and tartness throughout. An unsurpassed old brown with the richness and complexity of a vintage wine.

Poured a deep, opaque brown with almost no head and some light bubbles rising. Not much special there. Aroma is interesting... slightly funky, sour dark fruits, followed by nice grapefruit twist at the end. First taste is brash like a watered down sour cider vinegar. Once my tongue adjusted, the vinegary taste mellows to a rich sour, lightly salted, with a little sweetness. Mouthfeel is light, no carbonation present at all, finish comes through bitter and puckering. Overall, a pretty nice beer and I don’t usually like sours. The Brown hiding behind this sour is really present though. It’s a nice mix.

Colore rubino scuro, schiuma media poco persistente, lieve carbonazione. Al naso sentori vinosi e fruttati. Al palato vino rosso, ciliegia , acidità appena accennata, finale dolce. Birra molto equilibrata e complessa con diverse sfaccettature ad ogni bevuta.

Tap at Logan’s. Deep amber brown with one finger head. Light body for the style, but big tart cherry, dark fruit and light apple. Really interesting take on a bruin.

330 ml bottle. Pours a clear, dense chestnut brown with a tan colored head. The aroma is lightly yeasty and lightly malty (biscuit) with a light fruity acidity, some perfume and notes of red wine. Medium body with a medium carbonation, a light sweetness, a light bitterness and a light acidity. The flavor is fruity with apples, tart berries, light citric notes, nectarine, vinous and some sweetish malt along with faint lightly roasted notes. Dry finish.

A bottle from Beers of Belgium drunk at Dad’s place while home on leave. Aroma: toast, wine. Appearance: clear, very dark brown, 5 mm. tan head. Palate: medium-bodied and sticky, average carbonation, astringent finish. Taste: sweet and sour - well-balanced, some salty taste at the finish. Not my favourite style at all, but interesting to try once.

Tolles Bier

From old tasting notes. 1988 vintage. Deep mahogany brown color with a rocky tan head. Small champagne-like bubbles. Complex bouquet reminiscent of sultanas, cloves and molasses. Palate is zesty malt with a tart, dry finish. Long citrusy aftertaste. As Belgian brown ales go, this is a true classic.

0.33l bottle. Blended in 2015. Fruity aroma, candized cherries, plums, raisins, dates, caramel, light sweet toffee notes. Dark brown color, white head. Malty taste, plums, raisins, dates, caramel, light alcohol notes, light to medium sour, light sweet, light bitter. Full body, slick texture, soft to medium carbonation and sour-sweet finish. Very good.

Vlaams oudbruin. Tamelijk mild, maar zuur overheerst. Je moet er van houden, maar dat doe ik niet.
