UPDATED: OCT 9, 2008 Bready sweet aroma with a light sour fruit. Needless to say the aroma was a bit off to me. Perhaps it might have been a line cleaning problem? Who knows? Maybe they are basic white cotton panties? Maybe its a thong? It pours gold with a nice soapy head. Its kind of got a weak flavor of say a Paulaner or a Spaten. Not a very pronounced hoppiness, although it does finish somewhat light and crisp I guess. Not really that good of pils. DSG (14685) - Tel Aviv, ISRAEL - MAR 16, 2015
[2/21/15] Draught at Winter Brew Fest 2015 in San Diego. Clear golden. Grainy aroma, a bit vegetal, with a grassy hops hint. Grainy flavor with mild grassy hops bitterness. bhensonb (15093) - Woodland, California, USA - JUL 6, 2008
Bomber from South Bay Drug. Golden color with a multi-finger white head. Smells a bit grainy, and there’s not much bitter. Medium body with creamy, but sharp, carbonation. It’s a bit bready or yeasty. There’s a nice sensation in the mouth, but it is rather flavorless, except for the b/y. Finally in the finish there is the slightest suspicion of hop bitter. That said it drinks fairly well, but it just isn’t right as styled: "While the definition of “pilsner” is open to much debate in beer community, it generally refers to pale, hoppy lagers, ranging from 28IBUs and up. Pilsners that do not meet the specific characteristics of a German or Bohemian pils will be given this generic classification" Agreed it doesn’t meet the Czech or German style, but does it deserve the generic? Is it weak malt liquor or good pale lager? For me it didn’t improve with time and continued consumption. Eyedrinkale (3214) - Astoria, New York, USA - DEC 7, 2008
Pours light gold from the bomber with a decent white head. Aroma is light dough and subtle hops. Flavor is more on the sweet side, as it tastes like a light tripel. A bit of lemon zest does not help and the Saaz hops are hardly noticeable. Not very good. ClarkVV (6642) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - APR 18, 2007

Been eyeing this one the whole weekend, but having heard nothing of the brewery, I didn’t jump on the chance to try it right away. Hair of the Dog brunch seemed like a good time for a pils, so here it is.
Rapidly failing white head atop a clear, true-bronze colored body with sporadic carbonation and little/no lacing.
Sweaty, hay and straw-like maltiness in the nose also shows a true lager yeast, with definite moments of crispness and plenty of the mineral character I associate with it, but alas, this one had a good deal of acetyldehyde as well. Not overly concentrated and thus not producing a strong green apple aroma, but lighter and adding a large amount of dry paperiness to the nose that works against the crispness of the malt and yeast. Seemingly pretty well-attenuated from the nose and with no diacetyl or DMS, it’s a shame that it’s got that strong paper-blandness. Hops are extremely minimal. Probably wouldnt kill them to throw in some more, even if it was just more saaz. Not expecting any huge, vibrant, bitter aromatics, but what’s there is a rather boring mess of soggy hop leaves and light nuttiness. Alcohol not apparent, medium to medium-low aroma strength.
Papery-blandness from the acetyldehyde being present in the flavor as well, the beer just never is able to muster much flavor or crispness. Right at the start there is a little flutter of hop bitterness and some light floral/herbal notes, with crisp yeast and light graininess from the malts, but it’s gone almost immediately, passing in to a slightly-too-loosely-carbonated middle that is quite bland, and yields a toasty maltiness that builds up on the palate and gives the mouthfeel an almost chewiness that it shouldnt have. Tough to finish, can’t remember if I did or not. Alcohol not present in flavor, nor any diacetyl/DMS.
Sure seemed like this was in pretty poor condition. Not sure how much of the blame rests on Lightning or Pizza Port.
02-Feb-08 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 01-Feb-08 for $4.79 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) I’ve been trying the various Lightning beers on tap for awhile now, but this is the first one I’ve tried from the bottle. Pouring this pilsener, the appearance leaves a lot to be desired. Yes, the golden-colored body is beautifully clear, but only the occasional carbonation bubble can be seen rising upward toward the top, and the white head is thin, filmy and very short-lived, quickly dissipating to a thin ring. The beer smells grainy and honey-sweet with not a lot of hop aroma unless the glass is vigorously swirled, which then produces modest floral hop aromas that still lag behind the sweet graininess. The nose leads perfectly into the flavor. First thought: wow, this is tasting really sweet for a pilsener! Sweet, honey-almond-like graininess really dominates, and the light but very floral hops seem to only magnify the sweetness. Very light bitterness does little to balance the beer’s flavor, and the mouthfeel really suffers for it. Medium in body, cloyingly sweet, and lacking crispness, it sits on the palate like a dead weight. Consequently, after less than half the bottle, this has become a chore to keep drinking. More aggressive carbonation might help, but it’s only medium on the palate. I recall liking this beer a little more on draft, but in the bottle, I can’t say I’ve enjoyed it and it’s not worth almost $5.00. At the very least, cut back on the sweetness and add more crisp hoppiness. Barreras (1687) - Diamond Bar, California, USA - JUL 20, 2014
Pours a pure yellow color with a happy corn aroma. Taste is grassy with a dry bad bitter finish. A crisp beer that left a Earthy lingering aftertaste that stayed on the palate. . This beer was dry, bitter and crisp, with a decent complexity. grimreaperguru (263) - santee, California, USA - NOV 3, 2010
Pours a cloudy yellow color with a short lived white head. The aroma was a light hop sent. The taste was a bland sour flavor that I did not like. The body was light and the aftertaste was bitter and sour.Overall not a good beer. eboats (1082) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - AUG 5, 2011
Pours light yellow with a white head. Slightly skunky malt aroma. Crisp cardboard flavor that has a light medicinal finish with the cardboard in there. slowrunner77 (11917) - Reno, Nevada, USA - SEP 11, 2016
Lightly cloudy yellow with huge pillow of foam that takes a looooooong time to go away. Hard to get any nose off this. Weak hay. Feel is overcarbonated. Sharply bitter and grassy. Ok, but with a slightly unpleasant aftertaste. Not gonna finish. Funny - their motto is "better beer through science" and 2 of 2 were off.
