I had this on the Holy Island, and while walking around the village I took a peek or two around the back. Small operation. The problem is, it’s not really mead--they don’t use their own honey, and they’re not really fermenting honey anyway. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it isn’t very good. Sharp, sickly, artificial and really unpleasant. Too bad, because otherwise it’s a nice story (and the Holy Island remains a magical place).

Snifter at St Aidens Winery, Holy Island, Northumberland. Very pale yellow, no head. More like a sweet wine, honeyed, quite rich, sharp alcohol note and a salty, calcium hint. Not for me.

onystrom (1333) - Magellan Hunter! - Skanderborg, DENMARK - MAY 8, 2012
Clear no color color... like water, no head. Aroma is odd. Flavor is sweet and marzipan with some sour bitterness.

Bottle. Pale yellow colour. Light honey aroma. Very spicey not that sweet honey flavor. Average light sweet finish. oily palate. Not that good mead.

Almost white, faint yellow coloured and clear. Has no head. Aroma of plastic, sweet, old socks. Flavor is heavy sweet. Syrupy texture. Flat.

old barnyard, pale, clear, light sweetness, lightly bitter, light body, soft carbonation, dry finish.

saxo (18299) - Højbjerg, Aarhus, DENMARK - APR 14, 2012
Bottle. No head. Color is close to water. Aroma and taste are herbs, honey and alcohol. A bit odd.

Benzai (15585) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - OCT 20, 2011
Sampled @ Southampton Arms, London. First mead ever. Appearence?? Hmm, quite hard to descri-be. Something like clear but slightly odd-colored water I would say. Weird anyway. Smells like some spirit or liquor. Pretty sweet, decent taste, soft as well. Little bit like white martini. Soft mouthfeel, soft carbo, medium body. Pretty nice.
