Black roasted barley and a slight hoppiness combine to give this Irish Stout its distinctive velvety texture and sensational creamy taste. Welcome to the dark side.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry roasted malt is more intense then I was expecting. Taste is quite dry with some roasted malt and dry coffee notes – somewhat more intense then I had expected. Body is about average with good carbonation. Well brewed though maybe a tad too dry for my taste.

UPDATED: SEP 19, 2006 Sampled at Mondial 2006. The body was black with a light tan colored head. The aroma was classic with coffee and chocolate. There was also some sweet pancakes. The taste was a lot of coffee with a hint of dark chocolate and a hint of bread crust. Definitely English type hops (Fuggles?) character. Very dry with lots of roasted cofee. Good stuff.

500 ml bottle from Metro Joanette in Verdun, Quebec (May 2006), served between fridge and cellar temperature in a Unibroue glass. The pour is utterly opaque and solid black with a large-bubbled diminishing brown head and plenty of thick lacing....nose shows first a grapy-sweet/sour quality, with dark roast quickly appearing, milk chocolate and prunes, a touch of fragrant woody/herbal hoppiness.....on the tongue, a nice roast though the body is a bit light, cold coffee and a hint of dark cocoa....at the finish, an unpleasant cardboardiness fades when more warmth arrives, but it remains a bit stale and dull at the end....still, not a half-bad attempt.

Bottle. Dark brown with a fair brown head. Not quite right metallic chocolate pudding and dark cocoa scent. Flavour is aluminum foil and cocoa, my teeth hurt.

Strong roasted barley in the nose with underlying cereal malt sweetness. Opaque black body is topped by a low, fine bubbled, brown head that recedes to a thin, partial cover and ring. Licorice notes to the strong roasty flavour with some very dark chocolatey bitterness that lasts on the tongue. Very dry medium body with lively carbonation that prickles the tongue. Snifter. Just above fridge temperature. Bottle (Peluso, Jan-05).

Bottle - 500ml. Opaque black body topped with an average frothy head. Nice malty/hoppy aroma with grainy, coffeeish and chocolate hints. Its well balanced taste shows more robustness and sharpness than the aroma. It leaves a long bitter/roasty aftertaste. Very good example of a Dry Stout.

Brown bottle, 500 ml, expiry date: June 2006; eye: opaque black with a nice cappuccino head, head persists mainly as a ring around the glass but also with an "island" in the middle, lacing; nose: roast, caramel and the hops that brings a welcome freshness to balance the smells; mouth: starts like a sledgehammer of roasied malt that gradually fades, it is the only taste up to the finale, as a finale the roasted malt is still present but it is accompanied by a somewhat aggressive bitterness but also cocoa and caramel, astringence is also perceived in the finale, quite bitter, very lightly swee, full body, slightly oily and watery texture, nice carbonation; overall: quite enjoyable FRANÇAIS Bouteille brune, 500 ml, date de péremption : juin 2006; oeil : noire opaque avec une belle mousse cappuccino qui persiste sous la forme d’un anneau autour du verre et d’une « île » au centre, dentelle; nez : torréfaction, caramel et le houblon qui amène une touche de fraîcheur pour équilibrer le tout; bouche : débute comme un coup de masse de torréfaction qui s’estompe graduellement, c’est même le seul goût perçu jusqu’en finale, en finale on perçoit toujours la torréfaction accompagné d’une amertume un peu aggressive mais aussi un peu de cacao et de caramel, astringence aussi en finale, assez amère, très légèrement sucrée, pleine en bouche, texture légèrment huileuse et un peu aqueuse, bonne carbonatation; en résumé : bien aimé
