Great dark color with wonderful tan head. Not much lacing, as the growler was a few days old. Sweet aroma; chocolate and coffee. Flavor is nice and smokey, but surprisingly dry. Can’t wait to have it fresh from the tap. Harsebrau (227) - Kansas City, Missouri, USA - FEB 23, 2009
Another gift from Craig, by way of his momma. Deep, dark brown with hues of purple swirling through the edges. Tan head that, again, probably due to the growler being several days old, did not stick around for that long. Aroma of sweetness, chocolate, coffee. Flavor was smoky - tobacco - and chocolate and coffee on the finish. Dry, dry beer. Sucks all moisture from ones mouth. Theis (15150) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - NOV 17, 2008
Draught at GABF 2008. Black - brown head. Coffee, rye, smooth body, oat, chocolate, roasted, grainy, licorice, lovely, dryness. sneagrams3 (2337) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - NOV 1, 2008
Tasted 10/14/08. Growler from the brewpub. Thanks Keir! Pitch opaque hue with a bone white ring of head. Coffee aromas with hints of fudge, anise and pepper. Medium to full bodied with a great malt roast. Moderate, yet nice acidity. Solid coffee bitterness. Smooth stout overall. Good and fresh. Indra (2710) - Suburbia, Kansas, USA - OCT 30, 2008
16oz. draft. Roasty, sweet aroma, coffeeish and sweet with notes of milky chocolate, toffee and lightly burnt grains. Opaque brown-black color, head is light tan and slight, leaving fine lacing behind. Flavor is fairly well balanced between the sweetness and the more roasty aspects, more milky sweetness and coffee with plenty of chocolate in between and seeing a malty-driven bitterness enter towards the finish, blending with a mild spicy hop flavor. Moderately effervescent and thin on the palate, body is medium. Pretty tasty.

Draught at GABF 2008 as Gella’s Oatmeal Stout.
Hazy dark brown coloured with a medium sized beige head.
Roasted aroma of coffee, roasted oat and chocolate.
Roasted flavour of oat, chocolate and coffee.
Roasted finish. extremeicon (113) - Wichita, Kansas, USA - OCT 13, 2008
I really, really enjoyed this one. Very dense black color with a creamy tan head. Pleasant sweet coffee/chocolate aroma. Flavor very intense and somewhat dry at first but as it warms sweeter caramel flavors start to seep in amidst the bitter chocolate and coffee. Nice full-bodied mouthfeel and a long-lasting aftertaste. Not worth driving 2 1/2 hours for on a regular basis but I’ll definitely be picking this up again next time I’m in Hays. beastiefan2k (4191) - HdG (past: NYC, KS, Rain City), Maryland, USA - OCT 13, 2008
Sampler @ brewpub. Pours with a thick murky head that just wont go away, khaki colored. Aroma is roast and a hint of sweet prune. Taste has just the right amount of sweet prune mixed with light roast and coffee. Very easy drinking with a lightly ashy aftertaste. gws57 (1276) - Saint Charles, Illinois, USA - AUG 17, 2008
Had this one on draught at the brewpub in Hays, Kansas. Cloudy, dark brown pour with a thick tan head, a sweet milky coffee nose, flavor is maple, brown sugar, coffee, bitter chocolate, and scotch. Incredible. BlackDonald (1126) - Gulf Shores, Alabama, USA - JUL 30, 2008
This is a pretty solid stout. Roasted coffee nose, with some hints of caramel and chocolate, even a light hint of dark fruits. Smooth on the palate, with some notes of burnt cocoa here and there, some light hop bitterness plays through in the finish. Nice.
