From time to time curiosity gets the better of us and you may stumble across a Little Creatures Single Batch beer. Its only natural that the mind wanders a little and we like to challenge the brewhouse and ourselves with different styles of beer. Who can resist the lure of unchartered territory?
On a roll after the likes of the Big Dipper, Dreadnaught and Quiet American, here theyve returned to Germany for inspiration (following last years Single Batch Marzen) with a lightly smoked Bock. The use of beechwood smoked malt is such that its barely detectable on the nose, where sweet malty aromas hold fort; instead, it appears more prominently in the flavour of this dark amber-coloured beer, where it goes to work with lots of earthy, spicy hops and ultimately contributes to a reasonably bitter, gently smoky finish. However, this Billy is mainly about the fulsome layers of malts, resulting in a delightfully smooth and impeccably balanced beer. But then again, its from Creatures so what did you expect?

Old bottle looking a little tattered (unsure of storage but even the label has grease marks), but into a snifter at just on cool this one goes. Has a sheen to it until its held to the lights where proteins are caught in suspension. A ruby hued chestnut with a tight bead a thin, off-white crown. Thickly malty, Bovril, Horlicks, Ovaltine and everything oldskool from the corner deli is the nose. A hint of sherry and ash, nail polish remover and rose petals adds rather than detracts - this has a pleasant nose considering it is the worse for wear. On the palate it heaves with melanoidins - did these guys go the extra length to do an actual bock decoction!? Again richly malty, textured and fruity with plenty of roasty, toasty, balanced and on par malts. Dates, prunes in syrup, stewed rhubarb, Ovaltine, dry lumber, rust/blood, smoke and charred wood; it is on the drier side yet all elements work perfectly together. Only fault was a mild soapiness to it, but otherwise I am impressed. Body at this stage is leaning away from medium to light with soft carbonation. Impressed! Bottle from Plonk. Dark brownish-red, caramel, mild smoke/oak aroma, subtle malt flavours. Nice.

Lots of bread, honey and nougat dominate the nose. You immediately notice the hops tingling your tongue, but they quickly give way to more sweet malt and some light mulled spices. The palate is reasonable, although it could be longer and more robust, and the alcohol is pretty prominent. An interesting beer, but not necessarily a great one.

Bottle. Pours a really nice bronze with some golden tinges down the side of the glass. Creamy tan coloured head. Aromas of rich toffee a touch of smoke and some nice floral hop aromas. Flavours are quite sweet as would be expected with a touch of alcohol to finish. Medium mouthfeel. Didnt mind this one to be honest.

Ive just opened a growler at home on a rainy summer afternoon. Sweet aroma with malty caramel and toffee notes. I got an initial strong bittersweet malt, which leads into some spice in the body, and a slightly smokey bacon/lingering bitter finish. I really enjoyed it; as a lighter bodied bock it suited the climate.

Deserves much better than the rating here would suggest. Unusual for a bock in how high the hop content is, regardless, this a very delicious, hoppy beer that boasts some lovely resinous cocoa and sweet coffee flavours with some smoke in the aftertaste. Odd but good.

Dark red hue with low carbonation. Sweet with notes of raisens. Some added on smokiness at the end. High ABV. Not great for a version of a bock of some sort.

From a 568ml bottle on 31/12/2012. Pours a fairly clear light amber with a biggish head which disappears quickly. Has a modest woody, smoky aroma with some caramel in the mix. The flavour is more distinctive, with light caramel, toffee and biscuit to begin and then moving onto some quite strong spice notes and a light but unmistakable smokiness. Not a world beater, but relatively interesting and quite enjoyable.
