2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours a clear dark brown, thin white head, decent lacing. Aroma is very herbal, subdued hops, and minimal malt. Flavor matches, unfortunately, and is very thin.
Dark pour on cask. Aroma has some mild bitterness and very earthy and green. Flavor has herbs, grass and english malts with some grassy bitterness and moss. 17thfloor (2444) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - OCT 13, 2009
On cask at the livery 8.20.09. Pours a murky dull pinkish brown with a small white head. Aroma has some light fruity hops, light roast, a touch herbal. Flavor is bland, no hops at all, a touch of roast, tea-like, a sweeter mild ale. Medium/light bodied, watery, with zero carbonation. xnoxhatex (1305) - Grand Rapids/Chicago, Michigan, USA - AUG 31, 2009
On cask at The Livery. Murky brown with small white head. Aroma is light hops and light roast, dy. Flavor is sweeter roast with some banana, some pine and medium bitterness, citrus. Medium cask body. Nice. Sammy (12846) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 8, 2009
Enjoyed on tap at the brewpub. Roasted barley, high IBU felt, there are Fuggles thought more than on hop. Average mouthfeel. Hop and malt aroma. Grapefruit colour with soapy white head. TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - JUN 26, 2009
Pours a nice dark opaque brown with small head, dissipates to a film. Aromas are faintly dark malt, with caramel but also some mellow brown sugar and chocolate even, light hoppy body with good florals and bitterness. Light body, sessionable, but lacking in a lot of flavor or personality overall. RAYBOY01 (2010) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 5, 2009
UPDATED: AUG 18, 2009 Bark brown pour, good clarity, and a moderate white head. The nose is all pine cone and herbal hops. Flavors are first the roasted grain sweetness then a pretty bright resinous hop kick. The texture has a hint of creaminess that I look for, and the whole thing finishes fairly dry and peppery. Good brew. tjthresh (1872) - Greenfield, Indiana, USA - DEC 12, 2008
Draft at the brewpub. Pours dark brown with a bit of white head. Odd piny raisin nose. Just kind of a muddled mess of muddy malt and bland hops. Medium body and just enough carbonation to keep it from being still. Not really enjoyable at all. BBB63 (6567) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - OCT 4, 2008
Handpull at brewery and served in standard pint glass: Deep brown that is close to black at the top supporting a frothy white head but little to no lace. The aroma has notes of roasted, chocolate, bready malts as well as some resiny and herbal hops. Hints of pear and dragonfruit esters, even some smoke towards the end. The taste is twangy and slightly sweet before a nice kick of hop bitterness takes hold. Dry chalky and smoky finish. The mouth feel is soft and very refreshing, bone dry finish. A nice hybrid beer that I would like to see more brewers attempt. Tmoney99 (15036) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - SEP 23, 2008
Firkin draft at brewpub tapping. Poured hazy black color with an average frothy brown head that was mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate roasted bread malt and hoppy aroma. Medium body with a slick texture. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. Complex solid beer.
