A reddy chestnut brown coloured pour with a lasting beige head. Aroma is toasted brown sugars, maple, raw grains. Flavour is composed of burnt brown sugars, little liquorice, red berry, twiggy nutty malts. Palate is medium sweet moderate carbonation. Little spicy.

Cask at the Falcon, HW, 05/11/16. Dark mahogany brown with a decent light beige cap that retains well. Nose is treacle toffee, spice, biscuit, brown bread. Taste comprises ashen tones, biscuit, spice, toffee, charring, light fruit esters. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, semi drying close. Ok.

Dark ale. Caramel, biscuity sweetness well offset by a roasted malty bitterness. Brown sugar, molasses, a hint of coffee bean.

Chestnut appearance. Dark. No old flavours and aroma poor. Reasonable bite on palate. All in all dissapointing given appearance.

Cask a The Water House (JDW), Durham, £2.09/pint. Very dark brown beer with a foamy, cream-coloured head. The nose isn’t great and has basement notes, a lot of booze and some sweet malts as well as biscuit and over-ripe dark fruits. The taste is largely bitter and boozy. It’s an unsubtle ale that bludgeons the tastebuds and tastes all of its 4.6% ABV. Some bread, brandy and plum flavours do little to improve it.

BlackHaddock (7574) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - JAN 9, 2016
Cask pint in my local Wetherspoons on 8th Jan 2016. Deep chestnut body with a decent head that gave some impressive lacing: malts rule the brew throughout. Semi-sweet with a dry finish. Didn’t pick up any ’old ale’ style flavours and aromas. Decent enough even if it didn’t feel like an ’old ale’.

Cask at WHOAF 2014, London. It pours a light brown color with a medium beige head. Aroma is malty, nutty, with notes of toasted bread, roasted malts, dark fruits. Taste is medium sweet with notes of roasted malts, bread dough, caramel, nuts, milk chocolate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Overall, tasty

Cask Pint at Wibbas Down (JDW), Wimbledon, London in Jan 2013 - Dark Brown in colour. Malty; roasty malts, caramel. Hoppy; some hop bitterness. Fruity; hints of fruits. Quite dry. Bitter roast malty throughout. OK. Drinkable.

tobacco aroma, snus-like. massively appley RNs. not a heavy palate, but not light either. sweetish malts, very nice dry earthy bitterness. Looks great, dark and an extremely sticky bready head, lots of lacing, more than markku’s guinness - thanks! Very nice old ale, has all of the mellowness you’s want, lots of roast. even a touch of burntness.
