Tap at The Pit. Dark black pour with a thin wispy tan head. Poured to the brim. Lots of vanilla in the aroma, some charred wood and bakers chocolate. Vanilla/cake vanilla in the flavor. Oak/bourbon comes through strongly. Tannic oak character. Gives the beer a sweet notes. Lots of vanilla, kind of obscures the porter aspect of the flavor. Very little roast comes through and most of the dark grain is only perceived in conjunction with the vanilla. Light medium body, almost dry.
On tap. Brownish pour with a tan top. Scent is sweet malts, caramel and coffee. Taste is sweet as well with coffee the driving taste. JCB (3999) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - SEP 20, 2012
On tap at Surf Club, Durham. Agree with the previous raters that this was an impressive offering from a still under-the-radar local. Thick, chewy dark pour with a medium tan head and an overall appealing appearance. Sunset, chain link fence, smoke and molasses in the nose. More chocolate malts to taste than expected, but overall quite smooth and the understated smoke does come through. Dug it. TURDFERGUSON (4058) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - AUG 29, 2012
Tap at Tylers Apex. Glad this was still on. Pretty nice porter, light smoke, lots of darker chocolate, coffee, a fair amount of roast. Nicely balanced and thankfully not too sweet. OldGrowth (3474) - the Containment Area, North Carolina, USA - AUG 21, 2012
Pint at Tylers Apex. Real good aroma, sweet and smokey. Coffee, Caramel, smoke, whisky. Smoke and whisky are subtle, dark Orangy brown color, good initial head that faded quickly to a ring. Sweet roasty flavor, though I get the whisky here. Medium body, smooth creamy mouthfeel, sweet dry finish. Darn tasty . Both aroma and flavor have a lot gong on. This brew it forward series really produces some.solid offerings.

Draft. Pours very dark and thick and has a relatively small head. Subtle notes of roasting in the nose. I got a bit of a bourbon-like sweetness to the taste on this one. Remarkably smooth drink. I was really very surprised at just how much I liked this one.
