This thick-bodied stout is a changeable beast — it’s a little different every year. We only brew one batch of the Black Friday stout annually, and it’s released the day after Thanksgiving. It’s aged in whiskey barrels.

Tap at Barcade: Near opaque pour with a deep khaki head. Pretty aromatic: chocolaty, roast, fennel, some hop notes. Silky body. Rich roast in the flavor. Soy sauce, char, long roast amd dark chocolate. A straight forward impy with a solid profile.

Not sure if we got a bad batch, but it was a very sour and highly acidic beer. Not the bitter burnt malts I was expecting. No molasses, no tobacco, more of a dulled cocoa and brown with vinegar and oak. Sour effervescence on the nose. Color was ok with a light blackish brown. Palate was sour. Bottle.

750ml bottle pours an opaque, thick black with some lacing, creamy, tan head. Nose has what you’d expect, licorice, molasses, some very dark raisins, some pencil lead, burnt caramel, a little tar, toast. Flavor follows right along, burnt caramel, black licorice, malt, toast, some mild coffee grounds, some raisin, some pencil lead, roast. Full bodied, sticky, roasty finish. This is a very well made beer.

I forget which trade I got this 750 in. Ok Stout with light body and a slightly tangy finish to it.

Bottle. Pours opaque black with a small dark brown head that dissipates fairly quickly leaving decent lacing. Aroma is roasty, anise, cocoa, molasses. Flavor is medium sweet, medium bitter, lightly burned, cocoa and roasty notes with perhaps a tiny bit of rubber. Some acidity. Medium plus body, lingering bitter and burned notes. Pretty solid effort.

Bomber, corked and caged. Pours opaque coffee with tan head that lasts. Smells of vanilla, wood, coffee, resin, and anise. Drinks with a mild alcohol bite and moderate lingering bitterness. Tastes of wood, maple, coffee, and dark chocolate. Good effervescence. Lingering coffee flavor.

Received in trade. The appearance was a jet black in color with a two finger off white to tan foamy head that dies within about one minute. The lacing is somewhat clingy yet sporadic with one ring of lacing near the top of the snifter. The smell had dark roasted chocolate mixed well with sticky sweet licorice. The taste was sweet through the previously mentioned flavors with a nice roasty yet sticky aftertaste and dry finish. On the palate, it sits about a medium to heavy with a pretty good carbonation for the Russian Imperial Stout style that gently brushes against my mouth and tongue in a roasty sort of way. Overall, pretty good Russian Imperial Stout well worthy of coming back to.

2012 bottle. Pours black with 1 finger of mocha head and nice lace. Nose of roasted malt, smoke, chocolate, coffee and booze. Full body with tons of coffee and roasted malt. Better than I was expecting, especially after looking at the bottle that the cork is sticking out way too far.

BlowOffTube (515) - Michigan, USA - MAY 12, 2013
Eh. Pours black with tan head. Smells like dough and yeast. Tastes the same with a hint of roasted chocolate and coffee. Not much to this one.
