Reviewed on tap at Great Lost Bear, Portland ME. As of today, currently from notes. In a pint glass. The appearance is a somewhat clear brown colored body with a film of a white head that quickly dissipated, some lacing clung to the sides of the glass. The smell has a super smoky meatiness coming through kinda like a "rauchbier" but not too much. The taste has a super smoky/roasty/meaty with the same aftertaste and a dry smoky finish. On the palate, it has a light to medium, probably not too sessionable, low carbonation sort of thing going on. Overall, I’m not sure if I should be reviewing rauchbiers, but this may be a smoked beer ....??? For the most part, I’m pretty sure I’d have this again. UPDATED: AUG 14, 2013 fantastic smoked malt aroma! assertive, but not over the top. just a slight burnt phenolic note, but it doesn’t really diminish the nice aroma. very clear, beautiful, amber/caramel color (like a märzen) with a mahogany tint. gorgeous color.. healthy head that last a good while. smoked malt flavor, much like the aroma -- assertive, not over done, with a slight burnt phenolic in the finish, that doesn’t detract from the beer seriously. med/light body. clean aftertaste. really great beer. def. my favorite long trail beer, now. ladnewton (1963) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUL 27, 2013
On tap at the Waterfront, New York on 9th July 2013. Clear copper with almost white film head. Smoky aroma with biscuit malts - the two flavours sitting well with each other. Exquisite in-mouth with rich woodsmoke meeting tangy citrus. Lasting smoky finish with delicate citrus notes; zingy mouthfeel and light body. One of my most enjoyed beers on US soil.

The aroma is smoke upfront, some sweet malt. The flavor is also smoked meats, bacon-y, and some malt, a little sweeter than the aroma. The appearance is a hazy red/brown. The finish is salty, smoky, little sweet. Not bad, not super interesting.
