COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This dark chocolate Porter is a very rich, roasty beer with top notes of chocolate derived from freshly roasted cacao. Strong but relatively smooth on the palate, its malty sweetness is evenly balanced with bitterness, and a slight dryness from the alcoholic strength. Look for solid notes of coffee, licorice, mild chocolate and more subtle hints of fruit and spices.

Had this on tap at New England Taphouse grille. Dark brown with a good sized off white head that persists. Rich caramel and toffee maltiness with a bit of dark pitted fruits and a bit of alcohol especially as it warmed. This was an aged barrel put on tap and honestly I didnt realize it was a porter until I looked it up on here. Feels more like a strong English brown or an old ale than a porter. Still a pretty tasty beer that has a bit of alcohol warming that I assume was pretty harsh when fresh.

UPDATED: JUL 16, 2016 Draft at Eulogy. Clear very dark brown pour. Slim amount of beige foam. No lace. Big and boozy. Black liquorice. Glossy dark chocolate. Blackberries. Vanillin. Burnt coffee. Way too syrupy sweet. Tastes more like brandy.

Can taste the alcohol in this one... aroma of a standard porter, smooth.. Not the greatest, but solid.

Bottle @ home, acquired via trade. Clear, dark brown appearance with a thin brown head. Aroma has some anise, dark chocolate, roast, vanilla, and a hint of smoke. Moderate sweetness and moderate low bitterness bitterness. Good balance. Nice clean flavor with mild black licorice, chocolate, a bit of dark fruit, and vanilla. Solid beer.

22 oz bottle, bottled 15 Nov. 2013, served in a Belgian snifter. Pours with a tiny head, most of which quickly disappears. Clear but very dark brown body is essentially opaque in the glass. Aroma: dark bread, chocolate, and faint fine liquer. Flavor malty sweetness nearly balanced with bitterness. Dark roasted grains with hints of roasted nuts, coffee, licorice, cocoa nibs, and dark fruits. Nicely complex, interesting and balanced. High ABV is evident but not harsh. Overall: this imperial porter is an engaging sipper.

Style et rsum: Imperial Chocolate Porter comme son nom lindique.
Comment: En ft chez Long Trail.
Note: 7/10

The beer pours a deep black with finger thick tan head that doesnt last very long. The aroma is outstanding, loaded with chocolate and a hint of coffee. The flavor, for me, is where this one really falls down. It starts off intensely hoppy and bitter compared to the sweet, chocolatey aroma. For the first few sips, all I get is hops and dark roasted grain bitterness. Chocolate made a brief appearance in the aftertaste. Theres more than a warming note to the finish, too. Id call it a burn. The notes of fruit and licorice in the deScription cant really be picked out against all the bitterness. Im not looking to have this one again.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, 2015 vintage bottling. Pours pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Awesome appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, raisin, fig, licorice, toasted dark bread, herbal, light pepper, light smoke/char, and roast/smokey earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, raisin, fig, licorice, toasted dark bread, herbal, light pepper, light smoke/char, and roast/toasted earthiness. Moderate roast/char and herbal/spicy hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, raisin, fig, licorice, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and earthy hop flavors; with a nice roasted bittersweet and hop spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from roast/hop bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a smooth, creamy/bready, and fairly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is fairly well hidden with only a small warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an excellent English imperial porter style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
