Made using a combination of high alpha whole British hops like Target & Northern Brewer for bitterness and balanced against roasted chocolate and black barley malts. A rich, complex beer that is still quaffable.

Light slightly burnt nose. Nice dark colour but very light airy head. Flavour burnt with a sour sharpness that puts off other flavours. Finishes with lingering sour and bitterness. Not a fan.

Rating #2321 - 2016.01.26 - Bottle in the aftermath at Craft Beer Fantasy League. Dark, dark brown/black pour with a weak tan foam that bubbles away super quickly. Aroma is earthy roast malts, coffee, and caramel. Taste is roast malts, with a hint of caramel and earth. Low-medium carbonation, and on point for style. Decent.

The pour was dark coffee coloured and it produced a huge head(might be my pouring style). Lots of lacing and the head settles to a regular sized tan colour. There is very little aroma even in a snifter glass but you can tell its a stout. The taste is of watery malt but is over ridden by a tobacco(as in ashtray) kind of experience. The mouth feel is thin. There is little to no bitterness to this drink and with the exception of the ash tray analogy, no after taste. I wouldnt recommend this product to anyone who likes a decent stout.

Bottle. Pours deep ruby black, small tan head, dissipates quickly, some lacing. Aroma is roasted malts, burned and ashtray notes. Flavor is light sweet, light bitter, roasty, burned, a bit of rubber. Light body, a bit of acidity.

Bottle to pint glass Black currant, toasted malt, molasses, sourness, and a little dark chocolate. Pours a silky black with a thin and moderately retentive mottled middling tan head. Taste is toasted malt, some molasses, nuts, chocolate and ending with coffee and very little hops. Drinkable, but not spectacular.

On tap at the brewpub, dark deep black color, with a tan head, with a mild chocolate, fruity yeast, chocolate chip cookie dough nose, with some light coffee, roasted, chocolate, toasted malt, faint cocoa powder, burnt toast accents in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a mild fruity, winey yeast, dark bitter chocolate, roasted, black, chocolate, toasted malty character, with a coffee, burnt toast, mocha, faint molasses, fruitcake, subtle nutty flavour, leading towards a winey, fruity yeastiness, lingering roasted, chocolate malt bitterness, coffeeish finish.

Bittersweet chocolate dominates this brew. Pours almost pitch black and has a dry chalky cocoa quality throughout.

Good for what it is, this style of stout is still a wee bit heavy for me. Nonetheless, Stoutnik is a great entry level beer for those interested in exploring the foreboding russian imperial stout style. Black as an endless abyss, minimal dark tan head. Aroma is sweetish with some milk chocolate, coffee and licorice scents thrown in. Taste is surprisingly gentle for this kind of stout; neither oily nor overly-molasses flavored, nor with the hop punch of Old Rasputin or Narwhal. Predominant milk chocolate and roasted barley flavor, with a licorice bite afterwards. If youre new to this style, give this one a whirl and then go on to deeper and darker things. If youre local, the best way I could describe this is think Dark Matter x 2. Decent and forgiving for the russian style of stout.

Dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is cola, sugar, roasted malts. Medium-light bodied, bittersweet on the palate, slightly roasty finish. Flavours are roasted malts, mild liquorice, cola. Not a fan of this one.

Dark brown, sweet with earthy dark sugars, balanced hoppiness and an earthy finish. Good rich porter brew.
