COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included. We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 lbs of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 lbs of TCHO Cacao Nibs were added to the coffee and cacao to steep before packaging.

Bottle from Jane’s Beer Store, Mountain View. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, bourbon (big surprises), leather, dark fruit, molasses. Taste: holy moly. Smooth, rich, intense; vanilla, coffee, chocolate, roasted grains, bitter slightly boozy finish. Wow. Perfect impy stout taste. Top notch.

Massive stout, thick and oozy, pouring a heavy, impenetrable black with the slightest brown doughnut head. Smells of oak and chocolate with maybe a hint of smoke on the perimeter. Tastes like a burst of bourbon and Hershey’s syrup at first, but slowly backs off the sweetness until a sturdy oak backbone emerges. Flirts with dark cherry and raisin notes, then fades into a bitter chocolate-oak finish laced with boozy warmth. Tasty, if a bit hot.

Appearance: opaque black with hints of brown around the margins, a short, short-lived loose beige head, no lacing. (4/5) Aroma: chocolate, coffee, bourbon, boozy dark fruit, oak, vanilla. (9/10) Taste: moderate-high sweet, high bitter. (9/10) Palate: full oily body, low carbonation, lingering bitter and warming finish. (5/5) In my experience, bourbon barrel-aged stouts can often be a bit much. So can coffee and chocolate stouts. When a brewery decides to do both (as an Imperial!), well, it’s almost always more than a bit much. And this is most certainly more than a bit much. In just about every aspect, this thing is massive - yet surprisingly well-behaved. No single flavour dominates: chocolate leads the way, coffee occupies the middle ground, and bourbon dominates the woody warming finish, but neither seems unbalanced. Rich and complex, big and boozy, warm and smooth. Reminiscent of the couple of hopped whiskies I’ve had recently (and just about as expensive per ounce). (18/20)

Negro opaco y espuma beis. Aromas de cacao, bourbon achocolatado, coco, café, vainilla, licor. Lo mismo en boca envuelto en una textura sedosa y un trago cálido.

UPDATED: JAN 10, 2017 375ml bottle. Black and thick with a small tan ring. Big huge aroma, chocolate, coffee, bourbon, molasses. Flavor is sweet, bourbony, chocolatey, hot. Fairly flat (surprise from this brewery LOL) with an incredibly thick feel. Very flavorful beer, but becomes too much pretty quickly, and is fairly typical for a decently well-done huge BA impy stout.

375ml bottle from Saveur Biere. Label tells this is 13.5% instead of 12.5%. Deep dark brown beer with very small head. Aroma is nice with dark chocolate, dark fruits, coffee, cocoa, vanilla, whisky oak and alcohol. Taste is much the same, but maybe isn’t as deep and intense as aroma. The end is full of chocolate. Full body, low carbonation.

Pours jet black with a dark brown head- dissipates quickly. Aroma is sweet with notes of bourbon, oak and vanilla. Taste is similar with a bit of warmth. Alcohol is masked reasonably considering the strength. Additional taste notes of chocolate, minimal dark fruit.

Pitch black color. Big nose of dark chocolate, dark fruit, bourbon, oak, tons of vanilla, cacao, low carbonation. Smooth. Slightly boozy. Not the best finish. Again interesting but not mind blowing.

Félelmetes kinézet, vérszomjas imperial stout-küllem lakozik a palackban, olajos, lassan hömpölygő, sűrű malátafolyam képe rajzolódik ki a kitöltés során. Benne foglaltatik minden, ami feketén érzéki, melyet az aromái is tökéletesen visszaigazolnak, amikor a pörkölt szemű kávés, kakaós, csemegeszerű, egyszersmind sós és alkoholos, vaníliás színezetű whisky-s foszlányokat útjukra engedik. Tökéletesre komponált főzet a maga csokoládés malátaleves, jelzés értékű szénsav-tartalommal felruházott, bársonyosra pörkölt, finomra hangolt presszókávés vonalaival, a bourbon méltóságteljes, mindenütt jelen lévő játékával, a vérbeli amerikai imperial stout-karakterrel. Selymesnek ható jegyei szinte simogatják ízlelőbimbóinkat, szétolvadnak a szánkban; pihe-puhává csillapodik a kezdetben félelmetesnek ható karakter. Kifinomult ital, a sejteni vélt vadságnak, zabolázhatatlan ízvilágnak nyoma sincs, mindent áthat a kifogástalan modor és az utánozhatatlan elegancia, talán túlságosan is elegáns ahhoz, hogy bestiális főzetként tekintsünk rá.
