UPDATED: NOV 16, 2016 375ml 13.5% bottle from trade with JC shared with brother. Aroma: intense boozy, alcool, bourbon, chocolate, molasses. App: pitch black with minimal to no head leaving shy lacing. Taste and palate: full body, liquoreux, chocolate and intense alcohol burning finish. Overall: amazing! This is my kind of BA imperial stout. You must like booziness of course but this has exactly what I like. It’s tasty, sweet but well balanced with the acidity and alcohol. Really really good. I need me more of this goodness. llkc (2655) - århus, DENMARK - NOV 5, 2016

UPDATED: OCT 27, 2016 37,5cl bottle at home, 13.5% alcohol. Nice artwork. Pours a pitch black colour, beige creamy lacing, no real head. Really rich bourbon, vanilla, chocolate and coffee notes fill the nostrils. Taste is intense aroma notes, toffee, butterscotch, maybe a bit red fruits. Finish is quite alcoholic and bitter, leather but very well balanced. Lingering roasted malty, bourbon aftertaste. Big body, low carbonation, velvety soft mouthfeel. Incredibly good!

Tasted from bottle. Pours black with faint tan head that fades quickly. Aroma is bourbon and lots of cocoa with a hint of coffee. Mildly bitter with nice sweetness. Hides alcohol well. Nice and chewy. Flavors of chocolate, caramel, molasses, vanilla, bourbon, toffee, licorice. Incredibly well done.

Bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck. BBA variant of Serpent Stout with creamy, medium thick, lightly lacing, moussy, yellowish beige head and opaque black robe with chestnut brown edges. Intense bouquet of hot chocolate sauce and ’real’ cocoa, candied dates, coffee liqueur, kahlua, vanilla-like oak, milk chocolate, leather, bourbon, stewed beef, molasses, burnt sugar, cinnamon, cured meat, fudge, black peppercorns, marmelade, liquorish candy, mocha ice cream, pipe tobacco, dried fig, candied banana, cappuccino, treacle on hot pancakes, lots of wet wood. Concentrated and intense candied sweetness at first, candied cherries and figs, with a thick, dried meat-like umami edge immediately following, as well as a dimly sourish undercurrent, all in perfect balance but with the sweetness prevailing without becoming cloying; carbo is soft, mouthfeel is - unsurprisingly for a beer of this style and posture - very thick, viscous and oily. A deep, multi-layered malt body ensues, caramelly and nutty, beautifully bittersweet with toasted bread- and heavily ’fondant’ chocolate-like character in the end, adorned with not only the actual cocoa further enhancing its chocolatey character, but also by a lively coffeeish, refinedly aromatic bitterness which in turn accentuates the roasted flavors in the end. Drying woody tannins and a genuine bourbon flavor establish a new flavor chapter in the end, before this thick mass of dark bittersweet maltiness enters the throat, heated by whisky- and brandy-like alcohol, which, though very clearly present, manages to avoid unpleasant astringency, though it does burn a bit on the lips. The vanilla-ish oak flavors linger for a long time along with a peppery hop bitter touch, but it’s the big chocolate flavor that sticks around in the very end. Bourbon barrel aged imperial stouts are a staple of craft beer culture and the style has brought forth many a memorable beer; this one, to my taste, is of no lesser standard or value than e.g. the Bourbon County brand or Founders’ KBS. Absolutely beautiful and a highlight in this brewery’s oeuvre, as far as I am concerned; deserves a near perfect rating in my book. Note: ABV on my bottle is 13,5% so I assume there are two slightly different batches? AdmiralVernon (1198) - SWEDEN - OCT 15, 2016
