And so the Three Wise Men set out from the East bearing gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. Along the Way, they followed a bright light. The Bible neglects to mention if they brought beer or not. Who goes crossing the desert without beer? How smart are we to believe these wise men were? Since Christmas is the season of gift giving more than receiving, please be a giver and share the Wisdom found in each and every bottle of our Gift of the Magi.

Bottle. It’s been a couple weeks now since this showed up at my door. I had pondered holding both bottles for a while but aspidites insisted that I pull one so I could try it fresh and enjoy the dry hopping, he’s never steered me wrong with anything beer related so what could I do? The pour is murky and burnt copper in color with a persistent ivory head. The aroma is primarily malt and yeast with a sort of musty orange note. Bright hop character in the flavor with a nice brettiness not unlike a fresh Orval. I like where this is going... The malt sweetness is very subdued and I refuse to believe the alcohol is 9.5 %, there’s only a touch in there. Everything seems to be balanced in this beer but its seems to be delicately balanced, if that makes any sense. If I were one to believe in tag lines for beer, I’d call this one the chandelier of beers. There’s also slight stone fruit notes. I don’t get the scores on this one; I think it’s awesome! To each their own, I guess. You can’t argue with anyone’s palate.

Florals, prune and clove. Hazy dark amber pour with foamy head like you just surfaced in a bath of it. Great balance. A little note of ginger or something in end. Sweet but a tang of spice. Good stuff. Tap at Sovereign.

From Jan 2008

I bought my bottle from South Bay Drugs & Liquors.

This pours from 750ml caged and corked bottle a hazy deep amber-gold with about a finger head of foam. It slowly recedes to a fine layer and it has plenty of lacing.

The smell is fruity and spicy with some notes of pepper and some nice funk.

The taste is very complex. I'm getting notes of caramel malt, pepper, lots of funk, some citrus, some grass. Then about midway through the sip, a really bitter & sour flavour mix that jumps to the forefront, lingers for a while, and then slides back down into the background. Interesting hop profile there. Btw, there are some flavours here that I can't really identify. Again, interesting. It does give me a bit of warming during and after the swallow and I'd say it has a medium mouthfeel.

Wow, that bitter/sour kick just hit me again and it tickles the tip of my tongue. The finish is quite bitter with grassy hoppy goodness along with another good dose of funk.

I'm on my second pour now and, as I expected, the appearance has turned totally cloudy. Man, the Brett is just ruling it now so, me being a fan, the drinkability factor just crept up a notch. Great sipping Ale, indeed. I'd buy it again.

0,75l bottle from Beergium. According to the bottle, this is 12% and lager, but who knows. Clear, red and brown with orange color beer pours a good head. Aroma has dried fruits, wood, malts and caramel. Taste has malts, caramel, wood and leather. Herbs in the dry end. Full- body, alcohol does exist but not dominating. Also this Lost Abbey has some quality.
