COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Five thousand years ago the Mayan Calendar last turned over. Since then, Nostradamus, The Book of Revelations and random Shaman have all prognosticated that mankind would meet a fateful end. Currently, our demise is scheduled for December 21, 2012 for it has been so decreed our world is about to end not in a Christian Judgment Day but rather a Mayan Apocalypse. Funny thing is, the Mayans dont actually believe in the concept of an Apocalypse. We at The Lost Abbey didnt want to miss an opportunity to update our original Judgment Day recipe to accompany us as we collide towards this impending Rapture. Like us, were pretty sure you can believe in dried Chiles, Cinnamon and Tamarind working well together in this beer. This means you can count on this little bottle of beer to help you survive this cultural Armageddon. Please pop the cork and enjoy this version. Weve got you covered. See you on December 22nd wherever life may take us.

Corked bottle, kindly shared by gunnar. ABV is 10.5%. Very dark ruby colour, nearly black. Moderate beige head. Sweetish malty and spicy aroma, nice. Malty and spicy flavour too, medium sweet, moderate notes of chili, I cant pinpoint the cinnamon and tamarind, but Im sure they are there.

375ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, tan head. Somehow cautious and indifferent aroma, hints of chocolate, unspecific dark fruit, spices, cinnamon. Taste is moderately sweet, dark malty, hints of dark fruit, plum, grapes and the like, dark chocolate, chili, cinnamon, some warming alcohol in the finish. Heavy stuff, somehow without emphasis, not really satisfying.

375 ml bottle shared by NobleSquirrel. Thanks, Brian! Pours a richer deep brownish plum hue. Darker, good haze, brownish rich body with just a touch of light on the edges. A frothy brownish head dies to a negligible layer, minimal lacing. Aromas are sweeter, Quad like with lots of dark fruit, brown sugar, kiss of cocoa and dry bakers chocolate. Gentle fruit, caramel and toffee mix with touches of gentle yeast. Peppery spice element doesnt really take hold for me, kiss of spice and cinnamon. Initial is fuller bodied, cinnamon and brown sugar, touches of cocoa, caramel and toffee. Gentle plum, dried fruit and toffee. Middle is similar, a bit chewy. Gentle spice (but not heat, bakers spice), a bit sweet. This doesnt really come together, the pepper barely makes an appearance for me. A bit sweet, sticky into the backend with some gentle cinnamon. Meh. I think the base is a lot better. This certainly isnt a bad beer, but I was just expecting a lot more from the treatment itself.

Pours dark brown, almost black, with a foamy head. Aroma of syrup, malts, dark ripe fruits, spices and hints of roastiness. Taste is carbonated, sweet, and syrupy with notes of dark ripe fruits, spices and caramel. Finish is sweet, carbonated and spicy with some licorice, syrupy and caramely toffee notes. Unbalanced, a bit messy.

Bottle:   Deep dirty brown, huge frothy light beige head, nice lacing.   Big whole wheat bready and dark pitted fruit nose.   Smooth on the tongue, bready, somewhat heavy, with a soft alcohol background.   Not as musty as Belgian examples, but comes across as similar in every other aspect.   Smooth, hides the 10.5% ABV very well.   Doesnt feel as big as others tho.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate   Slight grape popsicle flavor on the backside, which to me screams artificial.   No idea how to otherwise interpret that.   Sweet finish, malty, but not all that musty or barnish as other examples.   The dark pitted fruit isnt as heavy either.   The only really good quality is that its very easy to drink for 10.5% ABV, and its not a complete ripoff.   Does have some Quad qualities, albeit minor.   Thanks Ron!
