Sede Vacante is a blend of Barleywine aged in Cognac barrels and Brandy barrel-aged Angel’s Share and at packaging came in at 15% abv. A contemplative beer with substantial depth, Sede Vacante imparts tones of dark fruit and vanilla, with a warming finish from the Cognac. The strongest beer to emerge from The Lost Abbey, portions of the beer spent almost 5 years in a barrel. Sede Vacante can be enjoyed immediately or cellared till the next Papal Conclave, however long that may be.

Incredible aroma, appearance, taste (very bold but balanced), and warming mouthfeel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Aroma is malty with lots of caramel, toffee toasted bread, and treacle. Lighter chocolate notes with some raisin, fig, date and prune. Light alcohol spice and oak notes. Pours a murky, muddy, dark brown with a few forced bubbles but no head. No lacing and long legs. Flavor is similar to the aroma and is fairly sweet. Moderately strong malt notes with caramel, toffee, toast, and treacle. Light chocolate and nut notes. Medium light raisin, date, fig, and prune. Moderate bitterness. Light oak, brandy and cognac notes with medium alcohol spice. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with no carbonation; Flat Abbey at it's best. Low astringency and medium alcohol warmth. Overall, an amazing aroma with great barrel and malt character. The flavor is nice as well but the lack of carbonation really, really hurts this beer.

Bottle, thanks to Felipe! Pours kinda murky mahogany, no real head or lacing. Aroma is dark fruits and brandy, date, fig, brown sugar, oak tannin, cherry, vanilla light cocoa, prune juice. Flavor is pretty sweet, light bitter, complex, a bit vinous, boozy but not hot, liquid fruitcake. Full body, no carbonation. Solid. Starts to get old after a couple ounces though

Bottle. Lots of booze. Light vanilla. Taste is all syrup and flat. No bubbles. Overall decent.

Bottle. Thanks! A: Aggressive pour yields a pitch black body with a cappuccino head - that quickly yields to gravity. Legs. N: Brandy, wine grape, cocoa, leather, tobacco, burnt brown sugar, char, big raisin and prune. Cherry and cognac in the back. T: Very very sweet but only a touch cloying. M: Dense oily body with a light, light touch of carbonation. Huge alcohol. O: Decent Strong Ale. Or whatever this is. I don?t know if I can properly rate a cognac beer as I am not a huge cognac fan.

Draft at Monks. Very murky, nearly opaque chestnut brown pour with a quickly dissipating beige head. Tastes notably different from the other Lost Abbey dark brews. Supposedly a mix of Cognac/Brandy barrel aged Angels Share it presents some unexpected notes over the chocolate/toffee/coffee/vanilla/liquorice/dark fruit base. Flavors like persimmon, starfruit, green tomatoes, elephant ear mushrooms, olives, pimentos, and garlic shoots. The 15% ABV is very well hidden. Not my favorite but quite extraordinary.

Crooked Stave Tasting Night; dark chestnut with beige head, aroma has strong malts and dark fruits, some oxidisation, taste has treacle, big alcohol, fierce dark fruits, road tar, overages.

750mL bottle, pours a murky dark mahogany with a tiny head. Nose is complex, with dark fruits, slight oxidation and a little wood. Flavour is quite boozy, with caramel, wood, alcohol and varnish. Fairly perfumey on the finish, but very well balanced. Overrated due to rarity but very good.

GothGargoyle (2588) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUN 20, 2015
Muddy brown with pretty much no head. Aroma is raisins, fig, dates, cognac. Full bodied, sweet on the palate with a fruity background. Taste is raisins, dates, caramel, cognac. Yum.

750 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a medium white head. A big sour woody fruity nose. The flavor is pure sweet rich malty port goodness. Huge. Awesome.

Bottle - Dark malts, some sweet toffee and booze. Cloudy brown with a small head. Sweet, malty and a long boozy finish.
