December 2001, at the brewery. THIS IS THEIR FIRST BARLEYWINE? And they won a gold at the GABF? This is a wonderful brew, dark cherry in color, wonderfully smooth with and almost perfect malt/hop blend. You can almost chew this wonderful beer. Barley Wine Fest: Toronado. Deep amber, cloudy and dim colr. totally headless. A bit doughy in the nose, some salt, thick, worty, softened hop finish. Tasted a less yeasty sample that was better. July 2001, tap, Eureka, CA. Malty aroma on alcohol vapors, fairly still, multidimensional malt, sweet and hoppy and with appreciable punch! Very nice. A justifiable gold medal-winner. Classic barleywine profile: succulent, extravagant malt, complex, dense fruit flavors, and powerful, though masked, bitterness. Suberb!!
