My favorite organic beer. Dark, malty, hoppy. Surprisingly flavorful for an organic. Great brew! asedzie (826) - San Francisco, California, USA - JUL 26, 2010
Bottle. Description hints that this may be a dark california common beer - intriguing! Pours deep dark brown with tan head. Nose is light floral hops and roasted goodness, mild milk chocolate, very subtle coffee, yeasty doughiness. Flavor has excellent cohesion of several elements, light fruitiness, roasted grain, caramel, fruity esters, finish is lingering roasted notes and very slight bitterness. A definite success for this brewer, overall much more well-constructed than their common. Hophead22 (2879) - Redlands, by way of Wisconsin,, California, USA - MAY 22, 2012
22oz bottle. Rating #8. Dark and dense, black with s nice creamy tan head. Nice aroma, light roast with a good amount of cocao. Dark roast with sweet chocolate flavors and a bitter coffee finish. (2374) Oscbert (1302) - Lincoln, California, USA - AUG 28, 2013
~Light roasted malt aroma of chocolate and light coffee with vanilla bean.
~Pours pitch black with big fluffy lasting brown head.
~Nice roasty malt flavor. Almost borderline burnt but not quite, so it is really smooth. Some woody flavors, cocoa and coffee.
~medium bodied with high CO2, lingering sweet yet roasty finish.
~Very enjoyable black lager. Great style of beer. Could drink these all day. Fatehunter (2567) - Corbett, Oregon, USA - FEB 9, 2013
Poured into a lager glass. A thin, tan head on a black body.
The aroma is rich, roasted malt. Pretty good, if one-sided.
The taste is roasted malt at first, then a big kick of lemon bitterness. It seems a little disjointed but I like it.
The texture is smooth with moderate carbonation.
Not a bad black lager.

This poured the appropriate black you would expect from a Schwarzbier and raised a big bubbled and robust head. The nose was roasted malts and some treacle. Medium in body it had the smooth clean lager mouth feel. The flavor was roasted malts and the treacle like the aroma. Right on the mark for this style beer and very easy drinking and enjoyable. monk191 (1975) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAY 23, 2013
A very nice black lager. Pours a nice thick black with a light tan head. Smells great, like a vanilla latte. Tastes great as well, toasted coffee with a sweet malty finish. Very good! Had in the bottle at Billcos.

Bottle: Brown to black. Very dense amber head. Lifted roasted malt , coffee, molasses, slight char or smoke and just a hint of hops. Dry, high CO2. Not bitter. Roasted palate. Medium weight. Fresh bright palate. Long. Smokey or burnt but bright. Interesting beer. Heavy aromas, bright palate. Clean finish. BMan1113VR (7931) - Los Angeles, California, USA - MAY 22, 2012
22oz bottle with the red label. Black Cali Common, eh? Massively audible release of carbonation when uncapped. Pours with mostly head (medium brown, large bubbles, huge in volume, creamy, medium lasting) over a near black to deep cola hued body. Some brownish red-highlight that make it seem pretty clear. Retention is pretty solid. Roasty, bready, malty and lightly leathery aromas. A touch smokey, earthy, spicy. Bacon, jerky. Medium apple like esters. Brown sugar. Flavors are dry, roasty, bready, medium crisp, estery, raw apple, low acetaldehyde, smokey, leather, medium roast, grainy, fruity. Resembles a black version of Shelenkra (sp?) ’s Helles, albeit with a few more yeast biproducts. Dry, lively, somewhat small bodied. A bit crisp. Pretty sessionable. Feels smaller than 5.5% with minimal heaviness. Pretty solid. marcus (10222) - Sacramento, California, USA - AUG 8, 2012
Pours black with a huge tan head that won’t go away and a treacle aroma. There is a smooth dark malt flavor with a very dry finish. Easy to drink.
