3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at the brewpub.
Dark brown body with some tan head. Aromas of roasted malt and citrus, pretty straight forward. Some pine hops, a bit of smoke, and lots of roast.
Draught at the Lucky Labrador Beer Hall, Portland, OR as Black Sheep CDA.GothGargoyle (2588) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - APR 15, 2013
Clear reddish brown colour with a tiny off-white head.
Mild sweetness and mild hops in the aroma.
Bitter hops, sweetness and roasted malt in the flavour. Too bitter to be balanced.
Cloudy brown with a small pale head. Aroma is chocolate, leather, dates. Medium-light bodied, bittersweet on the palate. Taste is pine, chocolate, grapefruit. Alphadelic (2249) - Portland, Oregon, USA - APR 7, 2013
A dark reddy/brown. Bright chocolate malt on the nose, a little grainy and with much cocoa. Chocolate up front, a burst of nettle, a caramel tickle and then a thick, resinous bitterness that makes the tongue curl up like a slug on salt. beernovice39 (3269) - Idaho, USA - FEB 23, 2013
On tap. Dark brown with a tan top. Scent is citrus and roasty. Taste follows with a lot of pine. chris2431 (241) - Oregon, USA - SEP 28, 2012
Draft. I’m going to need to revisit this one at some point because my taste buds are shot but I think this is a pretty decent CDA. I’m worried that I’m the highest rating so far at 3.9 though. Yeah I’m going to have to try this one again another day. OldGrowth (3665) - the Containment Area, North Carolina, USA - JUL 28, 2012
Pint at brewpub. Ok aroma, citrus, on the grapefruit side. Mild roastiness about it. Clean dark Orangy brown, good head and lace. Bitter flavor. Medium body, smooth litely creamy mouthfeel, bitter dry finish. Good, but hard on the grapefruit side, mixed with darker roasty isn’t coming together for me. On tap at Venti’s South. A nice India Dark Ale. Hoppy with roasted malt and some citrus. Medium body and mild bitterness. Dry finish. Tasty. troopie (2497) - Munchen an der Willamette, Oregon, USA - JUL 12, 2011
Draught. Dark red black with thick white head. Much lacing. Faint but pleasant hop aroma. Hoppy flavour with some roast malt, not just another hop bomb. Lekker hop finish. raphael (1303) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAR 8, 2009
Didnt expect the color. mixed hop aroma with roast and smoke (& someones overwhelming cheap perfume.). darkest brown with no head and a little flat (on tap at the Multnomah Lab). the trick with black IPA’s is to not have the hops clash with the roast melt. black shep accomplishes this, but being a little mild in the hops and malt. still a decent hop buzz over the smoke, orast & caramel
