A very red almost soda looking. Sweet sugary smell. Very sweet at first, but quickly became bitter and alcoholic aftertaste. This is one of my first barleywines, so I may not be the best to judge this. I just did not like the bitter aftertaste after having a sweet start. paytoplay (146) - , California, USA - DEC 14, 2009
dasilky tasting, hophead84 bottle, 06. cool bottle and wax... Pristine example of a 3 year old barleywine. not my fav of styles, this was textbook in a way, made it great. young i might be so so on this, with 3 years of age it’s very much balanced. far to easy to consume, not the most complex but delicious. carmel, dark malts and stays dry on the palate, other examples I’ve had just go so sweet, this beer is in a great place with many more years 10+ of life left. Copper brown color with a slight tan head. Aromas of caramel, a touch of vanilla, light bit of raisins. Big creamy mouth, very effervescent. Tastes of toast, caramel, pears and big hop flavors that follow to a still overly bitter beer (for me) but will be interesting to see (taste) in another year or 2 - or 3? humuloneranger (8) - Oregon, USA - MAR 15, 2008 does not count
Amber color with rich malt aroma... definitely to style in appearance and aroma. Spare, but unique belgian lace and legs on the side of the glass. Initially sweet, followed by toasty malt and brown sugar. Then the hops keep moving around the malt flavors. The hops set this brew apart from other barleywines... they keep swimming around the palate. 22 oz. bottle. 2006 edition.
