A rich red to black beer carefully crafted from the finest crystal and chocolate malts. Chewy juicy fruit flavours give way to a deep lingering bitterness provided by an abundance of Styrian Goldings, Millenium and Nugget hops.

tombyars (1702) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - OCT 18, 2012
Tasted this at the Troon Beer Festival in October 2012. Cask, gravity dispense. Clear dark garnet in colour with a thin but creamy off white head. Hints of roast malt and bitter chocolate notes in the slight aroma. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark malt complex give a rich maltloaf base with juicy berry fruits evident. Bramble, plum and then tart woody redcurrants come to the fore as they start to intensify. Strong hop presence noted with resiny bitterness coming through in the dry almost peppery aftertaste. Finish has the malt just about edging it with roast malt, oak cask and chocolate flavours rolling in the mouth. A decent Old Ale in style and well recommended.

Bottle; a lovely deep ruby colour, with a thin but lasting nicotine coloured head; a roast malt and baked fruit aroma; high carbonation; slightly sweet; roast malt amd bitter chocolate in the taste, with a little spice; a hoppy finish with some fruit; perhaps slightly over-carbonated but plenty going on and all told a pretty tasty drink.

GBBF. Cask. Clear dark brown beer. Light dry palate. Good malt with a streak of sour chocolate. Well hidden hoppy fruit at the very end. Nicely joined up and tasty.

Bottle. Black beer with a strong head. The aroma is mildly roasted, and the flavour is pretty deeply roasted with a deeply bitter and fortified body and finish. Overall a really flavoursome beer.
