Originally brewed by Mackeson of Hythe in Kent in 1910. This was the first beer to use milk sugar to produce a Milk Stout. The Mackeson brewery was eventually acquired by Whitbread, which in turn was taken over by Interbrew (now AB InBev) who initially produced the beer at their Magor brewery in Wales. Subsequently has been contract brewed by Youngs and latterly by Hydes.

UPDATED: DEC 18, 2017 Historical review with no tasting notes. Taken from rating in my 1001 Beers book. My gran always used to drink this.

Jet black and tan one to two finger head. Taste is lactose, burnt caramel, mildly sweet, slight fag ash taste coming through also. This would have gone well with cigarettes in the day before the smoking ban. I like it for it's low abv. Would have liked to try at it's original 3% and on tap over a gossip with Ena Sharples! Still a classic though.

From old tasting notes. Opaque black, brown color. Creamy, dark tan head. Sweet roasted malt aroma is reminiscent of hot cocoa. Sweet roasted malt flavor with cocoa overtones. Mildly assertive roasted maltiness has a hint of sourness. Mild sweet finish.

Can. Black. Malty (roasty, coffee, burnt sugar, caramel). Far too sweet. Lingering sweet roasty aftertaste. Awful. Unique, but I didn’t like it! (2008)

An inoffensively weaker ’session stout’. Is genuinely reminiscent of milk with its creamy palate and taste. I don’t mind it as an alternatively to the great Guinness stouts.

Black, nice beige head, aroma of chocolate, coffee, caramel, malt, bitter flavor, chocolate, coffee, caramel, sweetish, medium bodied.

330ml can from Asda.Pours pitch black with minimal off white head. Roast malt and fruity aroma. Similar flavor, a little sweet, no bitterness. Quite thin. Inoffensive, but uninspiring.

sarauckelman (550) - Durham, Durham, ENGLAND - APR 30, 2016
Can. Black with no head. Really nice malty aroma. Smooth sweet flavor with an undertone of coffee. Full bodied.

uckelman (813) - Durham, ENGLAND - APR 29, 2016
330ml can. Pours clear, very dark brown. Latte-colored head. Lots of sweet malt aroma. Surprisingly much body. Surprisingly short finish. Medium sweet. Not outstanding, but inoffensive and could be a lot worse at this price point.
