Almost black with a decent beige head. Smells of mild roast malt and grass with some hints of berries. Tastes barely sweet with a touch of roast and plain bitterness. A good quality lowbrow beer (which is nothing to sneeze at). Jade (435) - AUSTRALIA - MAY 14, 2010
Dark and murky cola colour with a biege/brown head. Roasted toffee or caramel aroma. Very heavy coffee taste - which is really not my thing. It’s a quality beer no doubt, just not for me. BarossaLuke (552) - AUSTRALIA - FEB 28, 2010
Black colour with garnet highlights. Reasonable tan head. Aroma has some dark roasty character that is light to medium with some spciy/herbal light hop aroma. Clean palate that is medium bodied and quite refreshing. A very interesting beer, I think my first Schwarzbier, would like to try some others to compare. davidm (2081) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - JAN 6, 2010
UPDATED: DEC 9, 2012 Bottle at Auckland airport. Excellent beer. Roasted aromas, with chocolate, and toffee. Sweet taste with a bitter finish, average duration. Velvety palate, medium body. Dark brown; with a long-lasting, frothy , and white head. mickmac (491) - Ngunnawal, AUSTRALIA - NOV 18, 2009
Bottle. Pours with an average sized dark brown head over a dark ruby-black body. Subdued chocolate-coffee aromas and taste with a balanced finish.

Bottle from Kris Wines, London. ABV 4.8%, according to the label. Very dark brown with a huge beige head. Good roasted malts aroma with hints of espresso. Sweet roasted malts, some bitterness. Quite nice, though more stout character than schwarzbier in my opinion. nate2g (1548) - Boomtown!, AUSTRALIA - APR 11, 2009
Draught at Mac’s Brewbar, Auckland. Pours dark brown with a thin white head. Roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and hops. All pretty subtle though, the palate in quite thin. Low bitterness. Not bad. sdriessen (320) - Dunedin, NEW ZEALAND - FEB 1, 2009
Pours black with brown edges, and a creamy tan head.
Smoky, roasted malt like a stout yet sweet honey and herbaceous notes like a belgian blonde.
Very mild notes of coffee and hops.
Nice bitterness in the flavours balanced by a vanilla sweetness.
Tones of burnt malt, mellow coffee and apricot fruit.
Very nice and light on the palate whilst retaining fairly complex flavours. A bitter aftertaste that ends kind of smoky. donfardz64 (538) - Wellington, New Zealand, NEW ZEALAND - JAN 29, 2009
Pours almost black, with ruby. Brown fluffy head. Sweet aromas of chocolate, nuts, caramel. Flavour is nice, a bit sweet. The roasted malt chocolate flavour is there, with some bitter hops and malt. zebracakes (1339) - Washington DC, USA - JAN 5, 2009
On tap 01.05.09. Black brown, off white head. Aroma is chocolate, malt, and roasted nuts. Flavor is the same with an oily body, caramel, pine, coffee, dry finish. To me, this is more like a dry stout.
