Hot on the heels of our challenging summer release Hoppy Hefe comes our Mad Brewers winter offering Ginger Chops Alcoholic Ginger Ale. “Have these guys gone truly batty?” I hear you say!
Well, let me assure you our Mad Brewers are not into following the current trend of sickly sweet ginger “beers” which are suddenly flooding the market. But it set our furtive minds fermenting. Ginger is a wondrous aromatic & warming culinary spice which can be a great flavouring ingredient when carefully crafted into the brewing bill.
The trouble with most alcoholic ginger “beers” is they are not really beers. So we Mad Brewers thought it was time to put that right. This winter’s off beat concoction brings you the warming glow of spicy ginger, layered on an authentic beer brew boasting a full lashing of malted wheat & barley, rounded out with the subtle addition of an aromatic Australian honey. It won’t cure the common cold, but it’s sure to keep your innards warm this winter, while you doze off and dream of all things ginger. True to our Mad Brewers ethos of pushing the boundaries we found no need to dial up the alcohol & hops to light your fire this winter. Ginger Chops comes in at a moderate 4.2% abv. & with a bitterness of 12 BU.

Probably the worst drink I have ever had which incorporates ginger. Shit is an understatement. So fucking shit!

KeefOz (1913) - Tarragindi, AUSTRALIA - DEC 19, 2012
Poured a clear amber colour with any head dissipating very quickly. No lacing. Low carbonation. Aroma dominated by ginger such that no other aromas can be detected. Taste of artificial ginger with a hint of sourness about it. Light body, bordering on watery. While drinkable it’s not one I’d try again.

Davros (3282) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - DEC 13, 2012
Pours dark amber with a fading head. Nose shows heavy ginger and some honey. Smells like ginger bread. Honey and ginger as flavours too. Not bad but a bit too sweet with no balancing bitterness. Body feels watery.

Gramoit (494) - Surrey, ENGLAND - SEP 27, 2012
Pretty average stuff, not terrible but nothing notably good about this beer. Almost tastes like a Ginger Cordial.

Was expecting more for taste, very bland, no sweetness or fiullness of flavor. Not something I will be buying again unless something is done about the taste

Bottle. Orangish brown with a soft drink-like that fizzes away to nothing in a few seconds. Aroma of mature ginger, brown sugar, kaffir lime leaves. Nice. Then it’s a letdown. Thin and flat mouthfeel. Very slight sweetness, only a little ginger, some citrus. And then at the finish, it’s pleasant again - dry, mild ginger, gentle citrus. It’s quite good apart from when you’re actually drinking it.

330ml bottle. Cler deep amber colour with a noisey white head that settles quickly. There is certainly a lot more colour than most other ginger beers I have had. Familiar dry earthy aroma and similar flavour. Dry on the palate without the burn that some ginger beers have.

this beer had potential. mad brewers can knock up a decent whacky brew, see hoppy heff, and i dont mind ginger in my lager type beers, see monteiths summer ale. that said, ginger chops is a failure. way to lite on all flavours, could really do with a large dose of maltyness. worse than that is the horrible artificial sweetner flavour and mouthfeel. imagine watering down diet ginger ale, letting it go flat, and adding a little vodka. this beer.

Pyobon (1497) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - JUL 16, 2012
(bottle) Clear amber, no head. Aroma has gentle ginger notes with a hint of candy. Medium body, light carbonation. The flavour is disappointingly bland. There’s quite a nice start balancing citrusy tang, honey and hints of ginger, but it falls away to a bready vaguely gingery flat middle and finish. Overall it’s bland - unexciting but inoffensive.

330ml bottle. Dark orange in colour with a little white head that disappears very quickly. A nice ginger taste at first, but then thins out and becomes rather watery and bland. Not their best effort.
