The brain child of team member Hamish McArthur, this brew pays beery homage to his Scottish heritage and as such is a Scotch Strong Ale - otherwise known as a Wee Heavy. McArthur’s family tartan also adorns the logo.
Mad Brewers Wee Highlander uses crystal malts and has undergone an extended boil to create a high degree of caramelisation in the brew-house wort. The resulting brew is red in hue and has a very pronounced malty, caramel, roasted malt flavour. With minimal hop character to accentuate the maltiness, the Mad Brewers have also tossed in a small amount of peated malt to add light smokiness to the brew, as well as malted oats to add depth.

Clear amber ruby with small off white head. Aromas of egg, cream, peat, caramel, light grassy herbal hops. Med body, med carbonation big malt complexity finishes refreshing semi sweet and toasted lingering on.

I had this beer at the Kincumber Hotel Beer and Cider Festival 2013. A very good beer.

My first smoke scotch ale that I have tasted. The aroma it blinds you what you are used to. A good change to what I know as a norm.

ALLOVATE (3063) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - MAY 7, 2013
On draught @ The Norfolk Hotel, Fremantle.
Fiery, deep copper with a lasting and neat, yellow head of foam. Aroma of rubber, peat, toffee and burnt toast. Peat and heather dominates and is initially pleasant on the palate. Comes off as a whisky soaked ale; this flavour comes through well. Oily, soft and medium in feel. Malty, sticky, heavily toasty. Finish of ash and wood chips. Not altogether a unified effort on the nose and palate

Tap at 2013 Canberra Beer Festival. Aroma of sweet fruit and spice, some smoke, heavy, syrupy body, sweet caramel, fruit cake, low bitterness, low carbonation. Very nice in small doses!
