Look - Off white head. Darker brown compared to others. A lot of lacing Smell - Earthy. Vegetables. Malt. Chocolate. Taste - Follows the nose well. Add a little bubblegum. Feel - A lot of carbonation. Not as dry as the others. Overall - Reminds me of barrel aged. Earthy takes away the hoppiness.

Taster on tap at MadTree, from my notes. Interesting, big earthy herbal berry up front. Some dark chocolate, stone fruit, [illegible word], darker spiciness. Comes across as spicier, earthier than I remember Gnarly being, but to be fair, it’s been a while. Bigger bitter taste, kind of astringent. Lighter sweet, kind of tangy. Hazy red brown color. Ring of off-white head. Some ropes and bits of lace. Medium-plus body. Kind of soft carbonation. More dry finish. Interesting, but I’m not a fan.

Draft. Poured a clear dark brown color with an average fizzy tan head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate toasted dark malt and dark fruit aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted dark sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Complex beer that exceeded my expectations.

2/23/2016: Aroma has chocolate berry/currant, roasty; Brown color with a red hue; Flavor is vineous up front and moves more toward dark chocolate and finishes fruity with currant, slightly tangy; Medium body, well carbonated; Interesting, but not my favorite. Draught at Madtree Brewing Company in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Draft at Ei8ht Ball in a flight. Pours a hazy reddish brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have some of the roasted malt character of the base beer, chocolate, and earthy notes that gets cut by the dark fruitiness of the black currants, lightly tart, more noticeable in the flavor, I think Gnarly brown is one of their best beers so this variant while good is not as good as the base.

Draft at Ei8ht Ball, served in a flight. Pours a cloudy amber with a small beige head that laces the glass while settling into a ring and an island of film. Notes of toasted malts, black currants, leaves, and earth. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a smooth, malty, toasty mouthfeel that’s also a little tangy from the currants. Simple variant.

5oz sample at 101 Beer Kitchen Gahanna on 2/17/16. Pours clear brown with a thick pink head. Nose of malt, caramel, roast and berry. Sweet berry and caramel malt flavor with some berry tartness before a roasty coffee finish.

Sample at Brass Tap during the "Gnarly Gno Gmore" event on 02/18/2016. Dark brown color with a medium beige head that dissipates quickly to a wispy film. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of roast malt, coffee and a touch of fruit. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, berries and coffee. The finish is roasty with a malt and black currant aftertaste. Above average overall.
