motelpogo (8031) - Plzen, CZECH REPUBLIC - FEB 10, 2007
bottled, at a small bar in nuremburg a few doors up from altstadhof, served in a ceramic mug. splotchy off white head with what looked brownish underneath. aroma reminiscent of a landbier (i’m pretty sure this was unfiltered) - some passionfruit vine, freshly mown grass and caramel. bizarre texture - sharp and prickly but somehow explodes in your mouth and melts in your mouth simultaneously, quite unique. faint caramel sweetness but otherwise the landbier character is much more vivid than dunkel character. some fruit salad and cream and then loads of rasping bitterness. a real work of art

mullet (849) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - SEP 17, 2007
On tap at the brewery. Clear deep orange-brown, head only OK. German hops, cola, juicy juicy malt, a touch of rasping roast, apple juice and purple berries ("I ated the purple berries"). So juicy. Not much like a Münchener-style dunkel but fairly typical of these beers in Franken. Delectable stuff. Fantastically drinkable. Motelpogo wouldn’t shut up about how much better the bottled version was too - not sure why I didn’t think to, you know, buy a bottle.

Erzengel (9779) - Wuppertal, GERMANY - DEC 2, 2013
Rating from 9.12.2007: 5,1 %. --> 13

Schroppfy (2362) - Łódż, Warsaw, Poland; Michigan, Ohio, USA - OCT 24, 2010
Aroma is fresh wet earth, toffee, herbal and floral hop spice, wood (forest fire? Srsly...). Flavor is quite spicy - bordering on harsh, really grainy (even cinnamon? Something sharp to add to the dark bread, spiced nuttiness, pepper, flowers and slightly burnt sugar...). Challenging and I love this take. Mysteriously still in the glass with the tiniest wisps of head, yet lively. An unusual dunkel.

_angst_ (5009) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - JAN 15, 2016
Bottle @ Haket. Slow gusher which caught me off-guard. Pours hazy deep reddish brown with a huge frothy goldenish offwhite head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is rustic, malty and floral with toasted malts, dark bread, crispbread, toasted oatmeal, hay, dried flowers, minerals, liquorice hard candy, walnut skins and hints of lemon peal. Taste is tiny sweet, slightly bitter, heavy malty and floral. Mouthfeel is fat, soft, round, slightly sparkling and medium to full bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and tiny bitter with toasted malts, rustic dark bread, toasted oatmeal, hay, minerals, hazelnuts, lemon peal and hints of bread spices and rye. Amazing fat malt profile with suiting supporting floral hops. Slightly over-carbonated which is a pity but this is really good!

(bottle) pours a clear copper-ruby colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of heavy bubble gum, ripe cherries, barnyard, grass and tobacco, very interesting. flavour is mostly barnyard and floral hops, slightly meaty, with notes of lavender, lightly roasted malts and rose pettles. medium-bodied with lively carbonation. awesome dunkles.

Icedwarf (1886) - Etten-Leur, NETHERLANDS - AUG 25, 2015
Zwart bier met veel schuim. Gedronken van het vat in de brauereigaststätte. Smaak is bitter en kruidig met iets van caramel en chokolade. Erg goed bier.
